Fujifilm X-Pro3 Mirrorless Camera Body Summary
The eagerly awaited Fujifilm X-Pro3 mirrorless camera body has been announced, building on the previous generation X-Pro2 model, which launched in March 2016. There are several significant enhancements to the design and usability of the new body, starting with the addition of a rear mounted ‘Electronic Range Finder’. This places a convenient colour LCD on the rear for users to check their settings, where we would expect to see the live view display. This allows photographers to concentrate their view through the beautiful new EVF (more about that below), as well as to easily glance at their settings. The rear screen can be flipped round 180 degrees to expose camera live view, arguably offering the best of both worlds to the new rangefinder-style camera.
The upgraded body now employs the high quality back illuminated 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor first seen in the X-T3 and X-T30. This sensor compliments the excellent range of Fujinon X-mount lenses, drawing out detailed, high contrast, and sharp images as one has come to expect from the flagship model. The X-Pro3 has also been re-engineered to be one of the most durable camera bodies available today, with the use of titanium for exterior parts. This gives the structure which is also made from magnesium, an outstanding strength to weight ratio, keeping the system compact yet incredibly strong. With weather sealing now applied at 70 key points, Fuji has also advanced dust and moisture resistance considerably in this version.
As Fuji’s flagship stills photography camera in the X-series range, the X-Pro series is extremely popular with both enthusiasts and professional photographers. However, as seen with previous firmware updates, the X-Pro series are entering the realm of hybrid cameras, sporting both 4K and HD video options. This is continued with the X-Pro3 which features high quality 4K at 30p and full HD movies at up to 120p high speed recording. No longer are the X-Pro solely for stills.
To compliment the higher-resolution sensor capabilities, the X-Pro3 features an ‘Advanced Hybrid viewfinder’. This allows users to switch between the optical viewfinder (OVF), which provides a constant view of the subject without any lag, and the electronic viewfinder (EVF), which allows you to check exposure while you shoot. This could be considered more beneficial over providing just one viewfinder system as other manufacturers do currently.
The new EVF has been updated and is incredibly bright at 1500cd/m2, with high contrast, crisp, detailed life-like images, made possible by a new organic EL panel. The refresh-rate is extremely quick, coupled with 3.69 million dot resolution, and provides 100% coverage as well as 97% Adobe sRGB accurate colour coverage. There is also a boost function for smooth, higher speed refresh rates, providing an effective rate of 200fps with the cutting edge insertion of a black frame between images (invisible to the human eye). This is ideal for fast moving or erratic subjects, which will appeal to a range of photographers across several genres.
Fujifilm have a renowned autofocus system which has also been updated with this release. This extends the camera’s 91 autofocus point capability on this sensor with Intelligent Hybrid AF at up to -6EV phase detection. This allows for near complete darkness AF capability when using the XF 35mm f/1.4 lens. Many current and new X-Pro users working in street, documentary and other areas will appreciate the ability to acquire accurate subject focus in virtually complete darkness.
Fuji have also significantly increased continuous shooting and buffer speeds with the X-Pro3 over the previous version. We can now shoot continuously at up to 11 frames per second using mechanical shutter. Buffering has been increased to 145 JPG or 42 compressed RAW files, up from 8fps with 83 JPG or 33 compressed RAW files previously. For those looking to shoot in electronic shutter mode, the new model is capable of a very spritely 30fps.
One of big draws to the X-Pro system is that it is a classic photographers camera and Fuji have added to their popular list of stills features yet again. This includes a new 'CLASSIC Neg' film simulation, which simulates colour negative film that was used for everyday snapshots. Other photographer-specific updates include the addition of an HDR function and auto bracketing and auto blending of up to nine exposures within a range of scenes. These open a whole new level of possibilities including dynamic range to many including landscape, interior and architectural photographers.
