Choosing between RF and RF-S

Both share the same mount and work across full-frame and crop sensor bodies, though RF-S versions are built primarily for APS-C models. Fit one to a full-frame body and the camera crops to APS-C rather than using the full sensor.

Explore our mirrorless camera range to compare compatible bodies, or read our Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 review for a closer look at an APS-C standard zoom.

Choosing a focal length

Wide-angle options take in more of the scene, standard focal lengths suit a broad range of subjects, while telephotos give tighter framing of distant subjects. Zooms cover several focal lengths in one lens; primes stick to a fixed focal length and often open up to a wider maximum aperture.

For a real-world telephoto example, read our RF 100-500mm lens review.

Adapting existing lenses

EF and EF-S lenses can be used on compatible bodies with an EF-EOS R mount adapter, a practical route for anyone moving from a DSLR system. Browse the wider camera range for current bodies and kits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does L-series mean?

What does L-series mean?

It identifies Canon's premium tier, typically combining higher-grade optical construction with a tougher, weather-resistant build. Specifications vary between individual models, so it isn't automatically the right choice for every photographer or subject.

Will a teleconverter work with any lens in the range?

Will a teleconverter work with any lens in the range?

No. Extender compatibility is limited to specific models and restrictions can vary, so check the spec of both lens and extender before combining them.

Does every lens include image stabilisation?

Does every lens include image stabilisation?

No, it's included on selected models rather than across the board. Some compatible bodies add their own in-body stabilisation, and certain combinations coordinate both systems together.

Can one lens cover several types of photography?

Can one lens cover several types of photography?

Yes. Standard and superzoom options handle a broad range of subjects, while more specialised lenses add features like wider apertures, macro focusing, ultra-wide coverage or longer telephoto reach.
