Choosing for E-mount

Sony mirrorless camera bodies share the same physical mount, though various optics cover different sensor sizes. ‘FE’ denotes full-frame and ‘E’ is for APS-C, while third-party manufacturers apply their own naming conventions.

FE models mount directly onto crop sensor bodies, where the smaller sensor gives a 1.5x change in field of view. The reverse is also possible, with a full-frame body normally using its APS-C sensor area and therefore recording at lower resolution.

Beyond format, consider focal length and maximum aperture, along with practical factors such as size, weight, autofocus and stabilisation.

G, G Master and third-party choices

G and G Master form the premium first-party tiers, with GM as the flagship series, placing particular emphasis on resolution and defocus rendering. Higher positioning does not automatically make it the right choice, as focal range, aperture, dimensions and price may favour a G model or third-party alternative.

Sigma, Viltrox, Tamron and Samyang widen the field considerably, with autofocus and manual-focus designs for both sensor formats. Specifications vary, so check listings where autofocus, stabilisation or specific camera functions are important.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Are third-party E-mount lenses compatible?

Are third-party E-mount lenses compatible?

Yes. Models made for E-mount attach directly without an adapter. Many support autofocus, electronic aperture control and other camera functions, although exact feature support varies by product and body.

Should I choose a prime or zoom?

Should I choose a prime or zoom?

A zoom covers several focal lengths, providing more flexibility. A prime has a fixed focal length and can offer a wider aperture or smaller design, depending on the model. Choose according to whether versatility, low-light capability, size or depth-of-field control matters most to you.

Do I need OSS if my camera already has image stabilisation?

Do I need OSS if my camera already has image stabilisation?

Not necessarily. OSS provides optical stabilisation within the lens, while many bodies use sensor-shift stabilisation. Some combinations can use both systems, so check the product specifications where stabilisation is important.

Do all E-mount options use the same size filters?

Do all E-mount options use the same size filters?

No. Filter thread diameter varies between models and is usually marked on the front or listed in its specifications. Step-up rings can allow a larger filter to be shared between lenses with smaller thread sizes.

Do they need firmware updates?

Do they need firmware updates?

Some models receive firmware updates to improve compatibility, performance or features. Check the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model and follow its installation instructions, as the update method varies.

Can I use a teleconverter with any telephoto model?

Can I use a teleconverter with any telephoto model?

No. Teleconverters only work with specific compatible models. Check the product specifications before buying. They also reduce the effective maximum aperture when fitted.

Are these weather resistant?

Are these weather resistant?

It depends on the individual model. Some include dust and moisture resistance or other sealing around vulnerable areas, while others do not. Check the product specification.
