Panasonic Lumix GH5S Mirrorless Camera Body Features in Detail

10.2 megapixel High Sensitivity Sensor & Dual Native ISO Technology

The Lumix GH5S is able to achieve astonishing image quality and the best-ever sensitivity of any Lumix camera with a combination of the newly developed high sensitivity sensor and Dual Native ISO technology borrowed from Panasonic's professional video camcorders. This technology keeps noise levels low by implementing dual circuits to switch to high native sensitivity before gain processing, delivering beautiful footage with low noise in low-lit scenes.

Multi-Aspect Ratio Sensor & Suppressed Rolling Shutter

The 10.2MP micro four thirds sensor in the Lumix GH5S utilises a greater surface area and handles multiple aspect ratios of 4:3, 17:9, 16:9, and 3:2. Broad margins of effective pixels means that focal length doesn't change in these aspect ratios. Furthermore, rolling shutter distortion is suppressed by approximately 1.3x compared to the GH5 with high readout speeds when recording video or using an electronic shutter.

Cinema 4K 60p/50p with Unlimited Recording Time

While the original Lumix GH5 made it possible to record 4K 60p and 4K 50p, the Lumix GH5S takes this further and includes Cinema 4K at 60p/50p at a resolution of 4096 x 2160. Additionally, there is no limit to the recording time whether shooting FHD or 4K video (subject to battery life and SD card capacity).

4:2:2 10-bit & 400Mbps All-Intra recording

With Internal recording of video in 4:2:2 10-bit and an impressive 10.2 megapixel Digital Live MOS sensor paired with a Venus Engine that handles digital signals at ultra-high speed, the Lumix GH5S image quality per frame is dramatically improved with faithful colour reproduction and grading. High bit rate recording at 400Mbps, optimal for nonlinear editing, is also made possible.

4K HDR

The Lumix GH5S uses the 4K HDR video standard, which is a High Dynamic Range mode to reproduce both bright and dark parts of an image, making the subject appear just as the human eye perceives it. The camera records video with a designated gamma curve compatible with ITU-R BT.2100, and you can now choose Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) in Photo Style. A low bit-rate recording mode 4K HEVC for HLG is also available, which enables playback on AV equipment compatible with the HEVC compression format, such as Panasonic 4K HDR TVs.

Pre-installed V-LogL

The V-LogL is pre-installed on the Lumix GH5S and offers exceptional flexibility as well as a wider dynamic range for colour grading in the post-production process, and V-LogL features log characteristics with 12 stops of dynamic range. By default, the Look Up Table (LUT) data is Rec.709 standard. Lut can also be custom set for VLT format in camera. Then, with the V-LogL View Assist function, you can preview what your footage may look like after it's bene post-processed.

Anamorphic Mode

Shooting with an anamorphic lens and using the fullest extent of the 4:3 sensor the camera's built-in 4:3 anamorphic mode makes it possible to create video in the cinemascope format. Stunning cinemascope videos are created in post production using dedicated software but the de-squeezed cinemascope images can also be previewed wile recording, or in playback, on the camera display.

VFR with FHD 240fps

To elevate video expressivity even further, a variety of effects are available on the Lumix GH5S. The VFR (Variable Frame Rate) lets users record overcranked/undercranked video in C4K/4K (60fps, maximum 2.5x slower) and FHD (240fps, maximum 10x slower). The minimum frame rate for quick motion effects video is 2fps.

0.76x 3,680k-dot OLED Live View Finder

The Lumix GH5S has a large LVF (Live View Finder) with a stunningly high magnification ratio of approx. 1.52x/0.76x (35mm camera equivalent) and providing a smooth display at 120fps. The high-precision, high speed OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display features 3,680k-dot high resolution and 100% field of view. With an eyepoint of approx. 21mm, the LVF offers high visibility with comfort for users wearing glasses. It is always sharp and clear from the centre all the way to the corners.

3.2" Free-angle Touch Monitor

Adopting a static-type touch control system, the 3.2-inch free-angle rear monitor in 3:2 aspect ratio with 1,620-dot high resolution features an approx. 100% field of view. It uses a pixel structure of RGH (Red/Green/Blue) and white to feature even higher visibility in sunny outdoor scenes. It tilts up and down by approx. 270-degrees to make shooting at either high or low angles even easier.

Splash/Dust/Freeze Proof Magnesium Body

Tough enough to withistand even heavy field use, the main structure is composed of a magnesium alloy die-cast front and rear frame. Secure construction and a sealing for every joint, dial, and button make the Lumix GH5S not only splash proof and dust proof but also freeze proof down to -10 degrees Celsius.

Durable Shutter Unit

The shutter unit is also durable for approx. 200,000 cycles. It also offers the highest shutter speed at maximum of 1/8000 sec. not only to capture spur-of-the-moment, fast moving subjects but also for impressive defocusing effects, for example using a high-speed lens with aperture fully open, even outdoors. An external flash can be synchronised with a maximum 1/250th second shutter speed.

Time Code In/Out and Line Input with 3.5mm Mic Jack

The Lumix GH5S is now fitted with a Time Code In/Out terminal, so by setting up TC synchronisation (through the flash synchro terminal and bundled BNC Converter cable with optional BNC cable), it is easy to carry out non-linear timeline editing of footage shot with multiple cameras. For more flexible video production, LINE input is supported by a 3.5mm mic jack to enable sound input from an external audio device.

Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 5GHz / 2.4GHz

The Lumix GH5S integrates Bluetooth 4.2 (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi connectivity for more flexible shooting, smoother remote control and faster image sharing with minimal power consumption. Connected to a smartphone or tablet, you can shoot, brose and share images remotely, as well as adding a GPS geotag. Furthermore, on a multiple GH5S camera shoot, your main camera setting can be transmitted wirelessly to other GH5S units. In addition to standard 2.4GHZ Wi-Fi this camera connects to tablets and other devices by the more secure, more stable and faster 5GHz (I802.11ac).

Optional Accessories for the Panasonic Lumix GH5S

XLR Microphone Adaptor

When shooting video, this adaptor allows you to record high-grade stereo sound to the camera directly through a high-spec XLR microphone. High-Res recording (at 96kHz/24-bit) is also possible when shooting 4K video. Selecting between separate Mic/Line/Condensor microphones is also possible using the input switches on the control panel.

Battery Grip

By using two batteries, onein the camera and the other in the grip, the DMW-BGGH5 extends battery life for longer shooting atimes. Robust as well as splash, dust, and freeze proof the grip is easy to grasp even when shooting vertically, complementing the Lumix GH5S design.

Our Verdict

When it comes to professional video production, the Panasonic GH5S ticks all the boxes. At its heart is a 10.2 megapixel high sensitivity MOS sensor, which may not seem like much, but those pixels are large and highly sensitive to low light, and they are all used when recording video there's very little wastage of the sensor area.

The multi aspect ratio of the sensor means that there's no cropping whether you're filming in 4:3, 17:9, 16:9, or 3:2, and the Dual Native ISO technology (borrowed from Panasonic's exceptionally high end video camcorders) uses dual circuits to switch between low and high sensitivity to ensure minimal noise when shooting, which means that the Lumix GH5S is a versatile and fully prepared camera for shooting video in any professional production environment.

With an ISO range up to 204,800, the ability to record in Cinematic 4K at 4096 x 2160, and Time Code input & output facility, the Panasonic Lumix GH5S is a dedicated and reliable video camera that's equally built for use in a professional video production environment as it is for solo video shooters or as part of a dual camera setup.

Compatibility with Lumix GH5 accessories and batteries, long battery life, and dual SD card slots (UHS-II compatible) mean that the GH5S is ready to go as a main or second camera.
