Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS G Master Telephoto Zoom Lens Summary
With the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens users gain access to outstanding optical quality with G Master resolution, a circular 11-blade aperture and Built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation. Being the longest zoom in Sony’s holy trinity of lenses, which includes the ultra wide-angle 16-35mm f/2.8 GM and standard zoom 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, this telephoto is as versatile as it is sharp. The focus range spans subjects as diverse as portraits and fashion, to landscapes and product photography, with virtually anything in between. Wildlife and sports photographers will also add this telephoto to their kit bags thanks to its zoom versatility.
Focus is aptly dealt with by a powerful RDSSM (Ring Drive Super Sonic wave Motor) found in premium Sony lenses, with hand holding supported by the bright constant f/2.8 aperture and 5-axis image stabilisation, even when panning. A series of special glass elements provide refined results for stills and video with focus breathing being well suppressed when capturing movies. To extend the lens without opting for the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM lens, users can add both the Sony 1.4x teleconverter and 2.0x teleconverter if required.

Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens features in detail
The Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM telephoto zoom lens delivers outstanding clarity due to its 3 advanced lens elements, including XA, Super ED, and ED glass components, and its Sony Nano AR coating. For the first time in a Sony zoom lens, it uses a floating focusing system that allows for a minimum focusing distance of just 0.96 metres and guarantees that autofocusing is optimised for video and still capture.
It features a Super Sonic Motor (SSM) and dual linear motors which move its large lens elements quickly for accurate focusing, and it has built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation which allows for sharp image capture at all focal lengths.
The FE 70-200 mm has a rotating tripod mount for quick removal from a tripod, and is both dust and moisture-resistant and fluorine-coated. It also has a focal range limiter, as well as a focus hold button.
Fast AF optimised for stills and video
Two heavy focus groups are rapidly and precisely positioned by separate actuators:
A powerful ring SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) actuator for the front group, and a double linear motor actuator for the rear group. Improved positioning precision works with real-time feedback from multiple position sensors to allow the body's AF system to operate at full capacity.
Further refinements for spot-on movie AF
The focusing system's double linear motor takes on the vital role of providing ‘wobbling’ actuation for the AF contrast detection system when shooting video. An optical design that effectively minimises focus breathing plus quiet mechanical operation further adds to focusing performance that is ideal for movies as well as stills.
11 blades for luscious bokeh
Sony's circular aperture design has traditionally employed up to 9 blades, but this lens incorporates an 11-blade circular aperture that takes bokeh quality to new levels of smooth beauty with natural looking highlights
High reliability in harsh conditions
A sealed dust and moisture resistant design and fluorine front element coating provide extra protection to ensure reliable operation in challenging environments

Our Verdict
The ultimate go-to Sony zoom lens, with a telephoto range making it ideal for shooting portraits, events and environmental wildlife portraits. A wide constant aperture of f/2.8, combined with image stabilisation makes this a dream for low light shooting, even when hand held. As the longest in the trinity of lenses, this G Master has garnered legendary status being used by advanced enthusiasts and professional Sony shooters. A series of lens barrel controls enable users to refine the lens according to the subject they are capturing through easily accessible switches. Whilst not being featherweight at 1480g (without tripod mount), the lens feels balanced and sturdy mounted on full frame cameras.
Autofocus keeps pace with subjects even when they change directions or move quickly, as well as being compatible with Sony’s own Phase-Detect Eye and Face systems. For those seeking smooth background blur and bokeh, this lens deliverance again thanks to a circular 11-bladed design. Image quality is further enhanced through the inclusion of Sony Nano AR Coating to eliminate flare and ghosting. And finally, outdoor photographers can continue working even during poor wet weather thanks to comprehensive dust and moisture resistance. There aren’t many telephoto zoom lenses which can keep up with is well regarded option from Sony and it comes highly recommended.
