Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD Lens For Sony E in More Detail
Bright optics
Tamron’s 11-20mm lens is the world's first constant f/2.8 ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. Despite this claim it remains compact, lightweight and very practical. With its usefulness derived from a compact, lightweight design with fast aperture the 11-20mm provides an exciting shooting experience with greater freedom in diverse shooting situations including low light.
Compact and lightweight
The 11-20mm is only 86.2mm long and weighs just 335g. which is a remarkably compact and lightweight combination for this type of wide angle lens. When used with an APS-C mirrorless camera it enables photographers to enjoy a responsive system without being hindered by size or weight. It provides a comfortable user experience for still photography and for shooting video using a small tripod or gimbal stabiliser.
Excellent optical performance
The 11-20mm construction includes 12 glass elements arranged into 10 groups. Two precisely located GM (Glass Moulded Aspherical) lens elements assure high resolution across the entire image. In addition, the lens incorporates one XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and two LD (Low Dispersion) elements to produce sharp images with well controlled optical aberrations. It also features the BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating that suppresses ghosting and flare to a minimum level and reveals the minute details of objects even when the subject is backlit. This also results in pleasingly high contrast well saturated colours.
Close Focus Capabilities
This model boasts an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of just 15cm at 11mm focal length and 24cm at the 20mm end. This results in more versatile close-up performance than existing ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses at their widest focal length. At the widest 11mm setting it has an astonishing maximum magnification ratio of 1:4 that enables wide-angle macro photography that exploits the perspective unique to ultra-wide-angle lenses, while also leveraging the expressive bokeh provided by the fast, bright maximum aperture of this lens.
Quiet and fast RXD focussing for stills and video
The RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) uses an actuator to precisely control the angle of the motor allowing it to directly drive the focusing lens without passing through a reduction gear. A sensor that precisely detects the position of the lens enables high-speed and accurate AF, which is ideal when shooting continually moving subjects or recording video.
Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating
In support of outdoor photography the lens includes Tamron’s Moisture resistant construction. The front surface of the lens element is also coated with a protective fluorine compound that is water- and oil-repellant.

Our Verdict
With several new releases the Tamron lens range for Sony cameras is growing rapidly with high quality third party options. This 11-20mm Di III-A RXD Lens joins the line-up demonstrating excellent performance even during low light situations thanks to the brightest aperture for an ultra wide zoom in the world at the time of launch. Despite including a host of optical elements to ensure sharp high resolution image and video, the lens remains compact and lightweight, perfectly suited to Sony compact APS-C size cameras. The lens has a fast and quiet focus motor for content creators who utilise Sony’s advanced AF systems which performs well again for stills and movie capture.
Ultra wide angle lenses will typically be used for landscape, astro and other outdoor subjects, so users will be rewarded with excellent versatility from a great focal range as well as extremely close-focus capabilities. This opens up compositional opportunities to create dynamic and compelling images with close-up foreground subjects. Comprehensive weather resistance has also been added to cater for outdoor use, along with Tamron’s fluorine coatings on the front of the glass. If you’re a Sony shooter with a crop sensor camera this lens makes for a very interesting proposition for ultra wide subjects when high quality results are desired and comes throughly recommended.
