Nikon Z 26mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens Summary
Arriving as the slimmest full-frame (FX) wide angle Nikon mirrorless lens, is this Nikon Z 26mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens, which was originally announced January 2023. With a light weight of just 125g, this compact prime is perfect for on-the-go photographers who need a discreet option for anything from street photography to landscapes, environmental portraits, interiors and video.
You can capture grand scenes and dynamic videos with this portable lens, which offers a wide 79º field of view when mounted on full-frame Nikon mirrorless cameras, or 57º when used on DX crop sensor cameras. The 20cm minimum focusing distance provides versatile creative opportunities along with the ability to shoot in tight spaces to create epic shots.
With its bright f/2.8 aperture you’ll be able to master low light situations, render shallow depth of field and capture smooth blurry backgrounds, all while keeping your subject pin sharp. Nikon has also ensured the Z 26mm f/2.8 can be used outdoors during bad weather, thanks to being sealed against dust and moisture.

Nikon Z 26mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens in More Detail
Capture sharp and clear stills and video
In what seems like an impressive feat, Nikon has managed to pack an optical formula consisting of 8 elements in 6 groups, into the Z 26mm f/2.8 Lens. These include three aspherical elements which deliver high-quality results on both full-frame and crop sensor mirrorless cameras.
Ultra-compact prime lens
With 125g weight and measuring just 70mm x 23.5mm long, the Z 26mm is the slimmest lens in the entire mirrorless Z range, for stills and video. This is perfect for photographers and videographers who need a portable all-day option, which is discreet and unobtrusive, yet delivers great results across the frame.
Versatile characteristics for stills and video
You can get close to your subject and create dynamic wide angle compositions when shooting with the Z 26mm thanks to a 0.2m minimum focus distance. The 0.19x maximum magnification ratio also adds to the versatility of this model, extending your creative opportunities when shooting anything from sweeping wide shots to interviews, which create a sense of place.
Compact lens hood with filter attachment
The lens hood can be mounted to the lens without adding any real bulk, which allows you to leave it on in order to protect the front element at all times. Compact 52mm lens filters can be attached to the hood for greater artistic control when shooting movies or long exposures while using ND filters, polarisers and more.
Low light performer
The bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is adept at gathering light even in dimly lit environments, which is perfect for shooting handheld or for shooting at faster speeds to freeze the action. The 7-bladed diaphragm does a good job rendering smooth out of focus areas and rendering a shallow depth of field to draw attention to your subject.
Built for action
Nikon has included a robust metal lens mount for a reassuring solid feel, along with weather seals on the lens barrel and across moving parts on the lens. This ensures content creators will be able to continue shooting even during inclement conditions. When shooting from closer distances you can create artful bokeh and background blur to help make the subject pop.

Our Verdict
The Nikon Z 26mm f/2.8 lens is a great option for content creators who need an all-day, walk around wide angle prime, which they can leave mounted on the camera without breaking a sweat. This pancake lens is even slimmer than the compact Nikon Z 28mm F/2.8 Lens, and offers a slightly wider focal length with a wid field of view to capture epic scenes and dynamic videos. This makes it suitable for all sorts of subjects, especially where you don’t want to draw attention to yourself with a large or heavy lens.
You can get close to your subject in order to create exaggerated perspectives with smooth out of focus backgrounds, or capture wide environmental shots with everything in sharp in focus, to help tell the story. A compact lens hood can be left on the lens without adding bulk, which also enables you to add cost-effective 52mm filters as required when capturing stills and video.
This is a worthy contender for any Nikon mirrorless creator looking for a lightweight lens to shoot wide scenes and handheld movies during low light, which doesn’t draw attention, yet captures sharp and clear results.
