Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z Summary

Arriving as Voigtländer’s brightest f/1 interchangeable lens for full-frame cameras, the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z offers impeccable low light performance. The ultra-fast aperture is coupled with a 12-bladed aperture design, which renders outstanding defocus areas with beautiful bokeh.

Voigtlander’s optical design includes a GA (ground aspherical) lens element, which has been included in the design, which is made exclusively in the Nikon mirrorless Z mount and covers a full-frame (FX) image circle. Electronic contacts communicate data with the body, which includes EXIF data as well as supporting focus assist functions and 3 axes in-body image stabilisation. This makes it easier to achieve pin sharp focus with the manual-only lens in the real world, when capturing a wide range of subjects, for which a standard 50mm prime lens is suitable. These include anything from portraits and street photography to landscapes and day-to-day snapshots.

An all-metal lens barrel and silky smooth focus ring contribute to the durable and luxurious feel of the 50mm f/1.0 Nokton lens, which is a joy to use.

Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z in More Detail

Nokton lens designs

NOKTON is the title given to fast lenses with a maximum F value of F1.5 or lower among Voigtländer lenses. In the 1950s, when the Nokton first appeared, it was positioned as a lens that enables to shoot even under low light conditions. Now, the merit of fast lenses in modern times, where the sensitivity of image sensors has increased, is that the large bokeh at wide open apertures, which can be used as a photographic expression.

The NOKTON 50mm F1 Aspherical uses GA (ground aspherical) lens element, manufactured in-house, for the front surface of the lens. This difficult manufacturing process achieves sufficient rendering and superior performance at even the widest aperture.

In-house design and manufacture

The in-house designed and manufactured GA lens made it possible to use a high melting point and high refraction glass material, which cannot be used in the mould lens manufacturing methods.

By manufacturing an aspherical lens from a high refractive index glass material, it became possible to simplify the lens configuration while ensuring high performance. Through this painstaking work, a lens with a sharp styling, superior performance and a short length was born!

In addition, by adopting a floating lens mechanism, a stable image quality can be obtained from the shortest shooting distance to the most distant. Constant sharpness at all subject distances is now achievable.

The standard 50mm F1 lens is like a dream for photography enthusiasts, allowing you to enjoy extremely large and smooth bokeh compared to lenses with slower low F-stop.

Close at 0.45m minimum focusing distance

The high-precision metal helicoid with special lubricants can produce very accurate focusing when the aperture is wide open and its silky focus-feeling is another luxurious feature of the lens.

Due to the 50mm F1’s total range of 12 apertures, the out-of-focus part of point light sources are depicted in a desirable rendition and shape. It also comes with a metal lens hood that may be mounted in reverse making it both portable and versatile.

Focus assist functions

The lens has three types of focusing support functions:

  • focusing by colour changing of the focus point frame
  • peaking function focusing
  • focusing with the enlargement button

This lens is equipped with electronic contacts, but there are restrictions on the bodies that can transfer lens data. Please check the list for Body Firmware EXIF compatibility below.

Nikon camera body firmware

  • Z7 v3.4 or later
  • Z50 v2.2 or later
  • Z6 II v1.3 or later
  • Z fc v1.0 or later
  • Z6 v3.4 or later
  • Z5 v1.2 or later
  • Z7 II v1.3 or later
  • Z9 v1.0 or later

If the firmware is a previous version to that listed above, some functions may be limited, and when using a full-frame Nikon body, the imaging range needs to be amended manually.

Looking to sell your Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z?

Our Verdict

Whether you shoot street photography, portraits or general snapshots, the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.0 Nokton Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z offers an immersive experience with incredibly detailed and sharp results. The bright f/1.0 aperture is faster than their own Apo-Lanthar 50mm F/2 Aspherical Lens For Nikon Z, and offers unparalleled low light capabilities, together with the opportunity to experiment with an extremely shallow depth of field.

A 12-bladed aperture design contributes towards the rendition of beautiful bokeh, and the ability to separate your subject from background elements with smooth defocus areas around the frame. As a manual-focus only lens, you can achieve pin sharp results more easily by using focus assist features such as peaking and zooming in thanks to electronic contacts which communicate with the camera. The focus ring is ultra smooth and well damped, perfectly complementing the high-quality all-metal barrel design.

Despite offering such high quality results, the 50mm f/1.0 Nokton weighs just under 600g, which is very reasonable even when shooting all day, especially for such as fast lens. Decades of experience have culminated in this exceptional design for mirrorless Nikon cameras, which combines an immersive shooting experience with beautiful results, which is sure to impress those prepared to take the leap into manual focus-only.
