Sigma 17mm f/4 DG Contemporary Lens Black for L Mount Summary

The Sigma 17mm f/4 DG Contemporary Lens Black for L Mount is one of Sigma’s redesigned I Series range, which has been purposely updated for mirrorless cameras. It provides a new level of optical quality from an even more compact, lightweight design. The lens is available for L Mount full-frame cameras, and is the lightest ultra-wide-angle prime from Sigma ever, with a 103.7° field of view, which weighs in at just 225g and measures 48.8mm long.

An all-metal construction gives it a robust, premium feel, with precision-cut aluminium components and tactile controls, including a manual aperture ring, knurled focus ring, and a metal petal-type hood. A dust and splash-resistant mount ensures some reliability when working outdoors, while the included magnetic lens cap improves handling and usability in the field.

Despite its small size, this L mount lens captures excellent image quality. The optical formula consists of 9 elements in 8 groups, including 3 aspherical and 2 SLD elements, which help when minimising distortion and chromatic aberration, while delivering good levels of sharpness across the frame. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating suppresses flare and ghosting, so you can shoot directly into strong light sources, such as a low sun while maintaining contrast and colour.

Unusually for an ultra-wide-angle lens, the Sigma 17mm offers a minimum focusing distance of 12cm, which enables creative close-up shots with a high 1:3.6 magnification ratio. With a 55mm front filter thread, photographers can add cost-effective lens filters and swap them across other I Series primes, helping keep kit weight and costs down.

The Sigma 17mm f/4 DG Contemporary Lens is an excellent option, which combines portability with optical performance for landscape, travel, interiors, architectural photographs and much more.

Sigma 17mm f/4 DG Contemporary Lens Black for L Mount in More Detail

Metal Build

As one of the redesigned I Series from the popular Sigma Contemporary line-up, the 17mm f/4 DG combines exceptional portability with high-quality build. It is made from precision-milled metal components, and the lens provides a solid, durable feel while still being incredibly lightweight. The design includes a manual aperture ring, tactile knurled focus ring, and petal-type hood for smooth, precise control.

Despite its robust design, the lens weighs just 225g and measures only 48.8mm, which is perfect for travel and all day shooting. A dust and splash-resistant mount with rubber sealing adds protection when shooting outdoors, while the included magnetic lens cap improves tactile usability.

Optical Performance

The optical design incorporates 9 elements in 8 groups, including 3 aspherical and 2 SLD elements to deliver high-quality results across the frame. This construction effectively suppresses distortion and chromatic aberration, even in high-contrast scenes, while maintaining edge-to-edge sharpness.

Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating is applied to reduce flare and ghosting by controlling internal reflections, which is especially useful when shooting into strong light sources, such as the low sunlight.

Close-Focus and magnification

Unusually for an ultra-wide-angle the lens offers a minimum focusing distance of just 12cm and a working distance of just over 7cm from the front element. This is complemented by a high 1:3.6 magnification ratio, which allows photographers to capture detailed close-ups without switching to a macro. This opens up more creative opportunities, whether you want to highlight foreground textures or shoot details.

Compact Uniform Design

At just 225g, this is one of the most portable full-frame wide-angle primes ever. The compact size is an excellent option for travel, interior, wedding, and architectural photographers who need to carry a lightweight kit for longer.

The lens also has a 55mm front filter thread, which is compatible with other Sigma I Series lenses such as the 24mm f/3.5 DG, 45mm f/2.8 DG, and 90mm f/2.8 DG, which enables filter sharing between lenses.

Sigma I Series Concept

The 17mm f/4 DG is one of the newly developed I Series from the Contemporary line-up. These combine advanced optical performance with compact designs for mirrorless systems.

When used alongside other I Series primes, photographers benefit from consistent rendering characteristics, including matching colour reproduction, smooth bokeh, and unified handling. This makes it easy to build a comprehensive kit while staying nimble and portable.

Additional Features

  • Water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element for easier cleaning and maintenance.
  • Internal focusing system ensures the lens barrel does not extend when focusing, keeping handling stable and balance consistent.
  • AF/MF switch for quick control between autofocus and manual focus modes.
  • Coated brass mount designed for strength and long-term durability.
  • Supplied with a magnetic metal lens cap and a standard plastic cap for flexibility.
