Hands-on Wandrd PRVKE 4 Backpack Review

It must be a lively time at Wandrd HQ, with a whole bunch of new bag releases arriving in mid-2025. These include a 10-year anniversary edition PRVKE, a second-gen. V2 series of Rogue slings, and the all-new Wandrd PRVKE V4 camera backpack, which is what we’ve been using for this hands-on review.

Hands-on Wandrd PRVKE 4 Backpack Review

Wandrd loaned us the PRVKE 31 Photo Bundle V4 Rhone Burgundy, which is their most popular camera backpack in a delightfully named Rhone Burgundy colour, which is new for this version. Both Nick and April spent the past couple of weeks putting it through its paces on the beach, in town and country, to see how it works for photography, gear access, and general carrying comfort.

So whether you’re eyeing it up as your first proper camera backpack, considering upgrading from an older bag, or just hovering at the checkout because, let’s be honest it looks that good, then join us for our hands-on Wandrd PRVKE 4 backpack review. We cover what’s new, improved, and what it’s like to use in the real world on everyday shoots.

What’s with the Rhone Burgundy colour?

Before we dive into the review, what’s the story behind the Rhone Burgundy colour, which appears throughout Wandrd’s 2025 ranges? Wandrd told us that it’s derived from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, a satirical American comedy from 2004.

It’s a classic movie if you’ve not seen it, and one that deserves to be honoured with this fantastic new colour.

As April put it, “I might have gone for an even brighter colour like the PRVKE 31 Photo Bundle V4 in Sedona Orange, but as camera bags go, the Rhone Burgundy really stands out, and is a welcome change from all of the usual boring blacks and dark blues.”

We all agree here, as this and Atacama Clay, which is the other new colour for 2025, are both great options that really stand out, without making your kit bag an obvious target or looking like you work in Search and Rescue. On top of this, 2025 packs feature a new monochromatic look, which means that the design palette uses variations of a single colour, which simplifies the overall design to a very stylish effect.

And with that, let’s find out about some of the best features the fourth-generation Wandrd PRVKE series backpack offers.

Grab your gear, from the rear

Wandrd PRVKE 31 V4 new and upgraded features

With three previous generations under their belts it’s fair to say that the good folks at Wandrd have plenty of experience in making the PRVKE series, which is their most popular range of backpacks for photo and travel.

One of Wandrd’s key attributes as a company is that they listen to customer feedback, so this generation bag incorporates a lot of updates that customers have suggested and asked for. And when we say a lot, there really are quite a few, including:

  • New monochromatic colour scheme, with matching straps and logo
  • More comfortable shoulder straps and breathable rear panel
  • New zip entry to the rolltop section
  • Strong magnets for the tote handles so they snap together
  • Taller water bottle pocket for a larger bottle or tripod
  • Metal buckles on the side straps
  • Upgraded YKK weatherproof zips, which are easier to open and close
  • Padded rear interior gusseted panel pockets for better gear protection
  • New complementary interior colour
  • Zipped access from the main compartment to the rolltop shelf

This is a seriously well-featured backpack, and of course it comes with a removable Camera Cube Essential Plus V2 insert, which has also been updated for this version.

Large zips for easy access

The Devil is in the Detail

If you like your bag to have lots of pockets and features, then this Wandrd PRVKE backpack has your name all over it. The devil is in the detail, and there are loads of well thought-out touches both inside and out.

10 of my own favourite features of the V4 backpack are:

  • Super-strong tarpaulin and ballistic nylon, which is weather-resistant and really looks the business, but also feels robust enough for real fieldwork
  • Extra-smooth YKK zips that are easy to open and close quickly
  • The option of side access to my camera, although it does take a little getting used to if this is a new way of accessing your gear
  • Solid metal buckles and clasps, which feel like they’ll last
  • Rear panel secret hidden passport and AirTag pocket is a nice touch for peace of mind
  • Small, quite secret side compartment for an item like a wallet
  • Tote handles are nice for grab-and-go
  • Plenty of room for a laptop, tablet and other electronics in the inner panel
  • At around 1.5kg it’s decently lightweight, so you’re not overloaded before you even begin
  • A variety of colours, with seven to choose from

For everyday use and travel, this has to be one of the best backpacks that combines a unique style with such a diverse range of features, but it’s the modularity that has been central to the success of the PRVKE series, which we look at next.

How modular is modular?

The PRVKE’s modularity is based around its compatibility with Wandrd’s Camera Cubes and packing cubes, and is designed for people who don’t want a single-purpose backpack. Whether you’re interested in the 31L reviewed here or another size, you can choose from any of the removable V2 Camera Cubes to match your gear volume.

This lets you go from a camera-focused backpack to an everyday carry by simply removing the insert. You can also add exterior straps to carry a tripod, gimbal, helmet, or whatever else you need to attach to the pack.

The interior also accommodates Wandrd’s optional gear and travel cubes, including various-sized tech pouches, memory card cases, wash bags, and all sorts of pouches and wraps that fit neatly inside. If you like to mix and match, the PRVKE delivers once again.

Photographing at the beach with the 2025 wandrd prvke 31

All in all, I found the 31L PRVKE really easy to live with. It’s very comfortable (although I didn’t overload it), offers several different ways to access your gear, and has all the bells and whistles you’d want from a modular backpack that easily converts from camera to regular carry.

The colours for 2025 are unique, and there are loads of versatile features for travel and hiding away valuables, all in a bag that feels suitably tough for everyday use and longer hauls. Whether you’ve owned a previous version or not, this is a brilliant range of backpacks that look the business while delivering plenty of functionality for creators of all levels.
