Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Lens Canon EF (Auto Aperture) Summary
Designed to get close to the action, the short telephoto Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO Auto Aperture Lens for Canon EF offers 2:1 double size macro as close as just 24.7cm. The lens is designed for full frame Canon DSLR cameras, but can also be used with APS-C sensor models for 160mm equivalent focal length. Results are excellent with colour fringing and chromatic aberrations all but eliminated, thanks to the apochromatic (APO) design along with the inclusion of low dispersion elements. A 9-bladed aperture provides pleasing smooth out of focus areas, whilst the bright aperture facilitates a shallower depth of field and low light shooting.
Features at a glance
- 2x life-sized 2:1 ultra macro
- Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture with 9-bladed design
- Apochromatic optics
- Weighs 638g
- Removable lens hood
- Accepts 67mm filters
- Manual focus-only
With the Auto Aperture feature Canon users will get full Exif data together with aperture control, for aperture adjustment in the camera body. Not all Laowa lenses have this feature which is welcome to speed up the shooting process. Manual focusing is aided by lens barrel markings and fine tuning is smooth with the manual-only focus ring. Although this is predominantly a macro lens it can also be used for pin sharp short telephoto subjects including portraits. A combination of 12 optical elements in 10 groups achieve the levels of detail required to deliver such refined quality.

Our Verdict
Laowa is a force to be reckoned with for specialist macro and shift lenses. Their range includes more simple 1:1 options like the 15mm f/4 Macro Lens as well as extremely unique models such as the 24mm f/14 2x Macro Probe Lens. What they all have in common is manual focusing, great results and affordable price tags. That is certainly the case with this 100mm F2.8 2:1 Ultra Macro APO Lens for Canon EF users. It offers an impressive double life-sized magnification together with broad versatility thanks to a relatively compact size, accepting lens filters and the ability to shoot regular telephoto subjects.
A close minimum focus distance furthers the appeal of this lens, allowing you to fill the frame with larger than life close-up details of your subject. With a weight of 638g you’ll be fine handholding for some time although some users do opt to shoot close-ups with a no centre column tripod, particularly when focus stacking. Whichever way you shoot the results can be excellent, with sharp details, well controlled colour and virtually no aberrations to be seen. Manual focusing is assisted by a series of lens barrel marks, although a good technique is to always follow best practice for stable, sharp shots. Laowa does recommend that lens corrections are disabled in the camera menu, otherwise compatibility issues can arise with third party lenses. Luckily distortion and vignetting are also well controlled with minimal editing required to adjust these. This is a great choice for shooters who love oversize close-ups and also enjoy the 100mm short telephoto focal length for other subjects.
