Updates for Sports and Action Photography

To meet the demands of sports and action photographers, Canon is introducing a number of enhancements to improve speed, accuracy and subject handling:

  • EVF Viewfinder Priority Improves responsiveness of the electronic viewfinder on the EOS R1 by removing the delay when raising the camera to the eye.
  • Panning Assist Now further refined for EOS R1, providing image stabilisation for smooth, dynamic panning, which is particularly effective in motorsports and fast-action scenes.
  • Pre-Continuous Shooting Adjustment Enables users to select how many pre-captured shots are stored: from 1 to 20 frames on the EOS R1, or from 1 to 15 on the EOS R5 Mark II.
  • Auto Focus Through Nets AI-driven autofocus improvements allow the camera to intelligently track subjects through obstacles such as nets or fences.
  • Flickerless Shooting – Always Detection Canon’s flicker detection, previously introduced with the EOS R3, is now fully integrated into both the EOS R1 and R5 Mark II. The system continuously monitors for artificial lighting flicker (100/120Hz) and alerts users to potential exposure issues.

Workflow Improvements

Canon adds several tools to streamline data handling and image security:

  • Support for High Capacity CFexpress Cards Enables use of CFexpress media up to 8TB in size to support for extended shooting without changing cards.
  • C2PA Authenticity Adds integrated support for the C2PA standard to verify image authenticity, which was initially available to registered news agencies.
  • Auto Protection for Rated Photos Automatically locks images with specified star ratings to prevent accidental deletion. This feature is available on the EOS R5, EOS R3 and EOS R6 Mark II.
  • FTP Transfer Order Update Adjusts the default transfer order, now prioritising voice memos ahead of images in line with agency preferences.

General System and Usability Upgrades

Canon also delivers refinements to improve usability and customisation across the EOS system:

  • Button Customisation – Airplane Mode Allows users to quickly disable Wi-Fi with a dedicated button, useful in travel or secure working environments.
  • Exposure Simulation with Flash - Now supported on the EOS R1, R5 Mark II, R3, R6 Mark II and R8. Simulates final exposure when using flash during live view.
  • IBIS and Peripheral Coordinated Control IS Support Newly enabled on the EOS R5 Mark II, this combines in-body and lens-based stabilisation for smoother shooting with compatible lenses.
  • Improved Servo AF When Zooming Enhances autofocus tracking during zooming on the EOS R3 and EOS R6 Mark II, improving consistency across dynamic shooting situations.

EOS R50 Gains Dual Fisheye Support

A separate firmware update is now available for the EOS R50, which adds support for two new RF-S lenses the RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE and RF-S 7.8mm F4 STM DUAL. These expand the R50’s creative potential for immersive content and VR productions.

These updates highlight Canon’s continued investment in professional photographers with real-world camera improvements. For more information and to download an update for your camera, visit the official Canon Support Download Centre.
