Product Summary
Super telephoto reach on the X Series has traditionally meant more serious size. The XF 400mm F4.5 changes that, delivering a 609mm equivalent field of view at just 1,245g. Its bright maximum aperture and 5.5-stop optical stabilisation help keep handheld shooting viable even as light fades and subjects move fast.
Twenty-one elements are arranged in 14 groups, including four ED and two Super ED elements, which control chromatic aberration and preserve fine detail. A high-speed linear motor provides quick, quiet AF, backed by a limiter, preset recall and front-mounted control button for fast in-field adjustment.
The weight is distributed towards the camera body for more comfortable handling over long sessions. Comprehensive twenty-point weather sealing, operation down to -10°C and a fluorine-coated front element add protection outdoors, while optional converters extend native reach to 560mm and 800mm.

Reach and image quality
The long focal length brings distant action dramatically closer, while the aperture helps maintain faster shutter speeds as light drops. Twenty-one elements in 14 groups, including four ED and two Super ED elements, keep chromatic aberration in check and preserve fine detail, with a 9-blade rounded diaphragm helping to maintain rounded out-of-focus highlights.
Made for handheld shooting
At 104.5 x 239.5mm, this is remarkably manageable for the reach on offer. The optical arrangement places the centre of gravity closer to the camera body, reducing the front-heavy feel common with long primes and helping to limit fatigue during extended handheld shooting. Stabilisation further counters camera shake, while twenty sealed points, a fluorine-coated front element and operation down to -10°C add protection in difficult conditions. A 95mm thread accepts conventional screw-in filters.
Fast AF with dedicated controls
Internal focusing keeps the moving group small and light, letting a high-speed linear motor deliver quick, quiet autofocus. The preset function recalls a stored distance via the SET button, while the front Focus Control Button accesses AF-L, PRESET or AF according to the Focus Select Switch.
For distant action, the limiter restricts operation to beyond 5m, cutting acquisition time when close-range hunting isn’t needed. Minimum focusing distance is 2.75m, providing 0.16x maximum magnification.
Extend your reach
Both Fujifilm X Mount teleconverters are supported. The XF1.4X TC WR gives 560mm, equivalent to 853mm, while the XF2X TC WR increases this to 800mm, equivalent to 1,219mm, adding significant magnification without another optic to carry.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does 400mm provide a 609mm equivalent field of view?
Fujifilm X Series cameras use APS-C sensors with a 1.5x crop factor, so 400mm provides approximately the same field of view as 609mm on a full-frame camera.
Who is the XF 400mm F4.5 best suited to?
It’s particularly well suited to photographers who need substantial reach while staying agile. Compared with the XF500mm F5.6, its wider field of view can make unpredictable subjects easier to locate and follow, while the brighter aperture provides more flexibility as light falls.
Is this suitable for someone new to telephoto photography?
Yes, although finding and tracking moving subjects at this magnification takes practice. The relatively low weight and stabilisation should make getting started more approachable than with larger super-telephoto primes.
Will the aperture provide good background separation?
Yes. Long focal lengths naturally help isolate subjects, and F4.5 provides plenty of scope for blurred backgrounds, particularly with good separation between the subject and its surroundings.
Do I need a teleconverter for bird photography?
Not necessarily. There is already considerable magnification without one. A 1.4x or 2x converter becomes more useful for particularly small or distant subjects, or if you regularly crop heavily.

- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen may have scratches or wear that is starting to affect the display.
- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
- Well Used – The equipment will show significant signs of wear. The paintwork will be coming away in large areas exposing the metal work, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
