Product Summary

This unusually small cinema body combines a 1-inch sensor with a Micro Four Thirds mount, allowing compatible manual lenses to replace the fixed optics normally associated with GoPro cameras. Native manual-focus lenses can be used directly, while adapters extend the system to selected vintage, PL-mount and specialist cinema glass, making it particularly useful where size, mounting flexibility or unusual camera positions are priorities.

Recording options extend from 8K/60p and 8K Open Gate through to 4K/240p slow motion, backed by 10-bit GP-Log2, HLG HDR, timecode and 32-bit float audio. HyperSmooth remains available with supported prime lenses, while Focus Peaking and magnified Focus Assist help compensate for the entirely manual focusing workflow.

In More Detail

M 4/3 Lens System

Unlike traditional GoPro cameras with a fixed lens, this action cam accepts compatible manual-focus Micro Four Thirds lenses, allowing you to choose the most appropriate focal length for each production. Prime, zoom, wide-angle, telephoto and macro lenses are all supported, while lens adapters further extend compatibility with selected vintage, cinema and other specialist manual lenses.

It has no electronic lens contacts, so compatible lenses must support manual focus together with either manual aperture control or a fixed aperture no greater than f/4.5. Autofocus, electronic aperture adjustment and lens metadata are therefore unavailable. Micro Four Thirds lenses are sold separately

Image Quality

The large 1-inch 50MP sensor, shared with the flagship, captures significantly more light than traditional action cameras, improving detail, dynamic range and low-light performance. The full 50MP sensor is used for 8K recording, while Quad Bayer 12MP mode improves low-light performance during 4K recording.

Image processing is handled by the next-generation GP3 processor, delivering twice the processing power of the previous GP2 chip. Dual Neural Processing Units accelerate denoising and intelligent image tuning, automatically optimising footage according to movement, lighting and the recorded scene.

HyperSmooth stabilisation maintains smooth handheld footage across a wide range of focal lengths without requiring a separate gimbal, while HLG HDR supports the Rec.2100 colour space for playback on compatible HDR displays.

The camera also captures 50MP stills in Single, Burst and Interval modes, while frame grabs up to 44MP can be extracted from 8K video.

Recording Formats

The camera records H.265 (HEVC) MP4 video at up to 8K60, 4K240 and 1080p480, with Burst Slo-Mo extending capture to 1080p960 for playback up to 32x slower. Aspect ratios of 16:9, 9:16 and 4:3 support cinema, broadcast and social media delivery.

Open Gate recording uses almost the full height and width of the sensor, preserving maximum image area for reframing, multiple aspect ratios and anamorphic workflows during post-production. Professional recording is supported by 10-bit colour, GP-Log2, HLG HDR and selectable bit rates up to 240Mbps, with a Standard bit rate option available for smaller file sizes.

Protune controls include colour, ISO, shutter speed, white balance and exposure compensation alongside Loop Recording, Scheduled Capture, Duration Capture, Time Lapse, Motion Time Lapse, Night Effects and HindSight, which records before the shutter button is pressed to help avoid missing key moments.

Monitoring

It includes professional monitoring tools for accurate manual focusing and exposure. Focus Assist enlarges the live image by up to 8x, while Focus Peaking overlays coloured highlights onto areas in focus.

The Monitor app for iPhone and iPad adds Focus Peaking, LUT Preview, composition overlays and remote camera control on a larger display. Alternatively, a USB-C to HDMI adapter or optional Media Mod enables external monitoring.

A 2.59-inch rear OLED touchscreen handles operation and image review, while a 1.4-inch front display provides preview or status information.

Audio

Four built-in microphones capture stereo sound with selectable Audio Tuning modes for balanced ambient sound or enhanced voice clarity. Audio performance may vary depending on the fitted lens.

For professional productions, the camera records 32-bit float audio to a separate WAV file for greater post-production flexibility. Processed MP4 audio can also be saved as a 24-bit WAV file without AAC compression.

Bluetooth 5.3 supports compatible wireless microphones and earbuds for voice commands and monitoring. The USB-C port accepts USB-C microphones directly or, with an optional adapter, 3.5mm microphones and headphones. Native multi-track recording, Automatic Gain Control, manual gain adjustment and limiter controls support more advanced productions.

Workflow

This action cam includes tools that streamline production and post-production. Timecode synchronisation keeps compatible cameras aligned for easier multicamera editing in Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro.

Custom Modes save frequently used shooting configurations for instant recall, while the interface can be personalised by reordering or hiding menu items. Scheduled Capture, Duration Capture, HiLight Tags and voice control further reduce adjustments during filming.

GoPro Labs further extends the camera with experimental features including motion detection, custom scripting and image stabilisation adjustments matched to the fitted lens. GPS metadata can also generate animated telemetry overlays such as speed, altitude and route information in the Quik app. Enduro 2 batteries provide the longest runtimes and fastest charging for the MISSION 1 Series, while HERO13 Black Enduro batteries remain compatible if additional spares are required.

Mounting and Rigging

Weighing just 197g, the compact body is easy to rig where larger cinema cameras cannot fit, making it suitable for vehicle mounts, drones, gimbals, compact stabilised systems and specialist production setups.

Integrated mounting fingers, a standard 1/4”-20 thread and Magnetic Latch compatibility provide broad compatibility with existing support systems.

Optional accessories including the Media Mod, Point-and-Shoot Grip and dedicated mounting system expand the camera for handheld filmmaking, vehicle mounting and more advanced production rigs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Micro Four Thirds lenses are compatible?

Compatible lenses require manual focus and either manual aperture control or a fixed aperture because the mount has no electronic contacts. Adapters can also be used with selected vintage, PL-mount and other manual cinema lenses.

What crop factor should I expect?

The 1-inch sensor gives an approximately 2.7x crop relative to full-frame without stabilisation, increasing to around 3x when HyperSmooth is applied. This means a 17mm lens provides a field of view roughly comparable to 46-51mm on full-frame.

Does it support autofocus?

No. Focusing is entirely manual, with Focus Peaking and up to 8x magnification available to help judge critical focus. External monitoring can also be added through compatible USB-C to HDMI solutions or the optional Media Mod.

What is Open Gate recording useful for?

Open Gate uses the full 4:3 sensor area, providing additional image height for reframing, vertical delivery and stabilisation during editing. It is available up to 8K/30p and 4K/120p.

Is it waterproof?

No. The interchangeable-lens version is weather resistant rather than waterproof, so it is better suited to protected rigs and controlled outdoor use than underwater filming or prolonged exposure to severe weather.

Can multiple cameras be synchronised?

Yes. Timecode synchronisation allows compatible cameras to be aligned for multicamera productions, helping simplify footage organisation and editing in supported post-production software.
