LK Samyang AF 60-180mm f/2.8 Lens for Sony FE Summary

Co-engineered with Schneider-Kreuznach, the LK Samyang AF 60-180mm f/2.8 is a full-frame telephoto zoom that joins the Compact Zoom Series for L-Mount alongside the AF 14-24mm f/2.8 L. At just 730g, it covers popular telephoto focal lengths for portraits, events, sports and travel while remaining easier to carry than most 70-200mm f/2.8 alternatives.

A minimum focusing distance of 0.35m and 0.26x maximum magnification extend its usefulness to detail and close-up photography. Weather-sealed construction and a customisable Focus Hold button complement the constant f/2.8 aperture for photographers who want a versatile, travel-friendly telephoto zoom without stepping down to a variable aperture lens.

In More Detail

Compact Telephoto Design

At 730g and 149mm in length at the wide end, this option is lighter and more compact than conventional full-frame 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. The reduced size and weight make it easier to carry for extended shoots, particularly for travel, weddings, events and documentary photography.

60-180mm Telephoto Range

The zoom range covers useful telephoto perspectives for portraits, events and action, with strong subject compression towards 180mm. Starting at 60mm also provides a wider perspective than a traditional 70-200mm zoom, offering greater flexibility when space is limited or working closer to a subject.

Constant f/2.8 Aperture

The constant f/2.8 aperture maintains consistent exposure throughout the zoom range, which is useful when shooting stills or video while changing focal length. It also supports low-light photography and provides shallow depth of field for subject separation and smooth backgrounds.

Close-Up Capability

A minimum focusing distance of 0.35m at the wide end provides up to 0.26x magnification, extending the lens beyond conventional telephoto subjects. This makes it useful for capturing food, products, flowers, textures and other smaller details without changing lenses.

Optical Performance and Floating Focus

The optical design comprises 17 elements in 14 groups, including seven ED, two aspherical and one high-refractive element. A Floating Focus System helps maintain consistent image quality at different focusing distances, including close-up subjects, while supporting sharpness across the frame.

Autofocus and Controls

A Linear STM motor provides fast and accurate autofocus, while dedicated focus and zoom rings offer direct handling. An AF/MF switch allows quick changes between autofocus and manual focus, while the customisable Focus Hold button can lock focus or be assigned an alternative function through compatible camera settings.

Weather Sealing

Weather-sealed construction supports shooting outdoors in changing conditions, including light rain, snow and dusty environments.

Our Hands-on Experience with this Lens

Nick reviewed the Sony E-Mount version, photographing portraits, wildlife, close-ups and everyday subjects. He found the compact telephoto zoom easy to carry, with excellent sharpness and contrast, attractive background rendering and particularly useful close-focusing performance.

Our LK Samyang AF 60-180mm F/2.8 FE Review covers the Sony E-Mount version, but the shared optical design provides a useful indication of what to expect from the L-Mount version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the lens for?

The lightweight telephoto zoom is well suited to portrait, wedding, event, travel and action photographers who want a constant f/2.8 aperture without the size and weight of a conventional 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.

Is it compatible with Panasonic, Leica and Sigma cameras?

Yes. It uses the L-Mount standard and is compatible with L-Mount cameras from Panasonic, Leica and Sigma, subject to individual camera and firmware compatibility.

How does it compare with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens?

At 730g, it is lighter than most full-frame 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses. The 60-180mm range starts 10mm wider, which is useful when space is limited, although it gives up 20mm of reach at the telephoto end.

Is 180mm long enough for sports and action photography?

The 180mm telephoto end provides useful reach and subject compression for many sports, events and action subjects, while the Linear STM motor supports fast autofocus. Photographers who regularly photograph distant subjects may prefer a lens with greater reach.

Can it be used for close-up photography?

Yes. Although it is not a dedicated macro lens, it focuses as close as 0.35m at the wide end and achieves up to 0.26x magnification, making it useful for details, food, products, flowers and other smaller subjects.

Does the aperture change when zooming?

No. The maximum f/2.8 aperture remains constant from 60mm to 180mm, maintaining consistent exposure and depth-of-field control while changing focal length.

Does this lens have image stabilisation?

No. The lens does not include optical image stabilisation, although stabilisation is available when paired with a compatible L-Mount camera featuring in-body image stabilisation.

Is it weather-sealed?

Yes. The lens features weather-sealed construction to support photography outdoors in changing conditions.
