Voigtlander 40mm F1.2 Nokton Aspherical Lens For Canon RF Mount Summary

The Voigtländer 40mm F1.2 Nokton Aspherical for Canon RF mount is a fast, manual focus prime for full-frame Canon mirrorless system cameras. Following the earlier RF-mount Nokton release, this lens expands Voigtländer’s native RF offering with a focal length that sits between classic 35mm and 50mm options, offering a natural perspective that suits a wide range of subjects, while being very close to natural human vision.

With a maximum aperture of f/1.2, the lens is capable of low light while also allowing very shallow depth of field when required. As with all Voigtländer lenses, operation is fully manual, with focusing and aperture control handled directly on the lens barrel. The optical design has been adapted and optimised for Canon RF sensors, rather than being a repurposed DSLR conversion.

Despite its fast aperture, the lens is compact and solidly built, weighing 400g and featuring an all-metal exterior. Electronic contacts allow communication with compatible Canon RF bodies, supporting EXIF data recording and in-body image stabilisation on cameras that offer it. A minimum focusing distance of 30cm also gives added flexibility for close framing, making the lens suitable for detail-focused work alongside more general shooting.

Voigtlander 40mm F1.2 Nokton Aspherical Lens For Canon RF in More Detail

Optical design

The optical formula consists of eight elements arranged in six groups, with two double-sided aspherical elements to control aberrations across the whole frame. This design allows the lens to render good sharpness even towards the edges, including when shooting wide open at f/1.2. Stopping down further increases uniformity, while retaining a natural rendering style that suits both stills and video.

A 10-blade aperture contributes to smooth background blur, particularly at wider apertures, with gradual transitions between in-focus and out-of-focus areas. This is especially noticeable when working at close distances or when isolating subjects against complex backgrounds.

Manual focus and handling

Focusing is entirely manual, with a broad, finely damped focus ring that allows for precise adjustments. When used with Canon RF bodies, the lens supports focus aids such as magnification, focus peaking, and focus guidance, except on the EOS RP. These make accurate manual focusing easier to achieve, even at a very shallow depth of field.

The minimum focusing distance of 30cm allows for close framing too, opening up creative composition options without moving into true macro territory.

Iris control

The aperture ring includes a mechanical switch that allows you to choose between clicked 1/3-stop adjustments or a stepless, silent operation. This is particularly useful for video recording, where smooth exposure changes are required without audible clicks.

Build Quality

The lens features a solid metal construction and a compact form that suits Canon EOS R-series bodies. Electronic contacts enable the transmission of EXIF data and allow compatible cameras to apply in-body image stabilisation corrections where available. A metal lens hood is supplied as standard and helps reduce flare while maintaining the lens’s compact profile.
