Canon EOS R1 Mirrorless Digital Camera Body Summary
Building on the immense heritage of the EOS-1 series, the Canon EOS R1 Mirrorless Digital Camera Body delivers flagship features for professional photographers and hybrid creators who need to stay ahead of the game.
The R1 is packed with technology designed for low light, high-speed subjects including sports, wildlife and action, but adapts equally well to capturing any of life’s unrepeatable moments. Canon’s first flagship full-frame mirrorless EOS R camera combines truly superb stills performance with deep learning AF and RAW video recording capabilities, future-proofing it against upcoming trends in stills and video content creation.
At its core is a newly developed 24.2MP back-illuminated stacked sensor, which is designed for faster readout, blazing shooting speeds and deadly accurate autofocus. It achieves this through its combination advanced Cross type AF with improved low-contrast subject acquisition, while adding the ability to track subjects which temporarily disappear behind objects such as nets, through the use of advanced deep learning AF technology.
The sensor is paired with the existing DIGIC X processor, accompanied by a new DIGIC Accelerator, effectively enhancing speed and AF capabilities. This is manifested in the ability to burst in continuous shooting speeds of up to 40fps RAW, a 1/64,000 sec. top shutter speed, Pre-capture shooting and new modes exclusively for high-speed action – including Active priority mode.
Canon has refined several features for the advanced EOS R1, which include Registered people priority and Eye control AF, while the latest Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system has been adopted for the camera.

Canon EOS R1 Camera Body in More Detail
New 24.2MP Stacked Sensor with DIGIC X Processor and Accelerator
The R1 features an all-new 24 megapixel back-illuminated stacked sensor, paired with a newly developed DIGIC accelerator and the existing DIGIC X processor. This combination forms the most powerful image processing system in EOS history, enhancing image quality while improving shooting speeds, usability, and autofocus (AF) performance.
The BSI sensor is designed to reduce rolling shutter effects and improve stills and video capture rates, effectively preserving the shape and detail of features such as wings, racquets, balls, and other small objects. It also allows more light to be collected at the pixel level, resulting in less noise and overall better low-light performance.
Sensitivity reaches up to ISO 102,400, and the camera incorporates neural networks to reduce noise from data signals, controlling digital noise even at very high ISO values. Image quality is further enhanced by Canon’s overhauled metering system, which offers more precise results through 6,144 white balance and metering zones. Low light sensitivity reaches -7.5 EV, catering for dimly lit venues and extremely dark environments.
Sample captured with the RF 24-105mm f/4.0 L USM Lens @40mm. Camera settings: 1/640 sec. f/4.0 ISO 3200
Users also benefit from a maximum 12fps in Mechanical Shutter, or 40fps using Electronic Shutter with pre-continuous shooting (ES), all with Servo AF. Users ca select Custom Continuous shooting speed with Electronic shutter in options of 40 / 30 / 20 / 15 / 12 / 10 / 7.5 / 5 / 3 / 2 / 1 fps. The buffer extends to 500 JPEG or 230 RAW images when shooting in 40fps with electronic shutter, and 1000+ JPEG or 1000+ RAW in 12 fps. with Mechanical shutter.
The R1’s 0.64-inch OLED colour EVF boasts a resolution of 9.44 million dots, almost double that of the EOS R3. When coupled with the maximum 120fps the EVF ensures crystal-clear scene previews and high-resolution image reviews.
Pre-capture shooting is available on the EOS R1, where up to 20 images are recorded with full AF, AE and tracking before fully depressing the shutter, expanding the potential to capture even the briefest moments of fast action.
Canon has also introduced Dual Shooting for the first time in an EOS camera, enabling you to record separate Full HD video and 17-megapixel (16:9) photos at up to 10fps to the two CFexpress cards. This lets you cover the same event while delivering high image quality more efficiently, eliminating the need to extract image files from video footage.
An in-camera Neural Network Upscaling up to 12000 x 8000 feature is also available, which creates files of up to 96MP without compromising on speed or sensitivity. By using deep learning upscaling, users can crop, reduce noise, and enhance size, satisfying the need for large-format photography without requiring a computer, a tripod, or missing any part of an event.
Sample captured with the RF 24-105mm f/4.0 L USM Lens @56mm. Camera settings: 1/400 sec. f/4.0 ISO 5000
6K60 RAW and 4K120 Video Recording
The Canon EOS R1 is an accomplished hybrid camera capable of recording a variety of movie formats, bitrates, and resolutions with Canon Log 2, 3, HDR PQ and Canon 709 available. Resolutions include:
- 6K RAW up to 60p
- Internal 4K UHD up to 60p oversampled and 120p not oversampled
- 2K or Full HD at 240fps
- Timelapse up to 4K 30fps
- 6K RAW externally via HDMI
The sensor reduces rolling shutter, ensuring distortion is kept to a minimum even when capturing the fastest of subjects. Canon has also adopted industry-wide file naming conventions, as well as allowing users to utilise Custom pictures, which match image styles between different cameras more accurately.
Sample 3 captured with the RF 70-200mm F/2.8L IS USM Lens @172mm. Camera settings: 1/400 sec. f/4.0 ISO 320
New Dual Pixel Intelligent AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II has evolved into Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, incorporating advanced AI technology and new features for the fastest and most accurate autofocus of any Canon camera to date.
Deep learning technology enhances subject representation and acquisition, allowing for precise tracking around obstacles such as nets, blocks of colour, and other obstructions. The tracking system has been improved to handle crossing subjects, enhance upper body detection, and avoid obstacles by estimating the head area of the subject.
Subjects include Humans (Eyes, Face, Head, Upper half of body, Body), Animals (Dogs, Cats, Birds and Horses) or Vehicles (Racing cars or Motor bikes, Airplanes and Trains).
Active Priority focus mode is available in Electronic Shutter for sports including football, basketball and volleyball. This feature predicts where the action will be, automatically switching the active AF area to a person performing the kind of a critical action that has traditionally been hard to shoot, such as a shot from a high-speed pass. Supported actions include:
- Football – Shoot, header, short pass, long pass, dribble, clear, place kick, save by keeper, throw in, sliding tackle
- Basketball – Shoot, rebound, pass, dribble, free throw, jump ball
- Volleyball – Spike, toss, receive, serve
The advanced AF system includes Registered People Priority, allowing up to 10 faces to be stored after photographing someone or using an image from a memory card. This feature, ported from the R3, has been improved with better face recognition in profile view and easier profile updates, making it an essential addition for sports, wedding, and event photographers.
Eye Control AF is another feature adopted from the R3, which is now more reliable than previous versions, with improved performance through:
- A higher pixel count sensor
- Improved infrared LEDs for detection when wearing glasses
- Larger eye detection algorithm
- Eye movement detection that is twice as fast
Sample 4 captured with the RF 24-105mm f/4.0 L USM Lens @74mm. Camera settings: 1/1000 sec. f/4.0 ISO 10000
Up to 8.5 stops Image Stabilisation
By utilising advanced 5-axis in-body IS sensor-shift technology, the R1 delivers up to 8.5-stops of Image Stabilisation with compatible RF lenses, for an unprecedented advantage when shooting handheld stills and video. It enables photographers and videographers to continue shooting handheld in low light situations without the need for a tripod or monopod, while realising sharp images and smooth footage.
Body Design and Connectivity
The flagship camera is built around a strong and lightweight Magnesium Alloy body and polycarbonate with glass fibre, with the highly respected RF mount at its heart. This provides access to the latest optical technology, with lenses for all subjects and situations delivering even better performance than their EF counterparts.
Two CFexpress Type B memory card slots are available and the body includes useful functions such as a Tally Lamp, Wi-Fi 6E + 2.5 Base T ethernet support.
The body provides fast wireless speeds at lower latencies, and FTP Multi thread is also supported, which enables faster data transfer thanks to a single large file being into multiple parts automatically for simultaneous download. Automatic access point recommendation is available, with automatic switching to stronger signals, and users can register a wired / wireless LAN for single connection.
Sample 5 captured with the RF 24-105mm f/4.0 L USM Lens @63mm. Camera settings: 1/800 sec. f/4.0 ISO 5000
Connectivity includes:
- WiFi at 6 Ghz / 5 Ghz / 2.4 Ghz Wi-Fi / Bluetooth 5.3
- USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C / 3.5mm Mic and Headphone Input
- RJ-45 Ethernet terminal for 2.5 GBASE-T wired LAN HDMI Type A Out
The R1 uses the high-end LP-E19 rechargeable battery pack, which delivers impressive performance at up to 1330 shots (at 23°C) with the LCD or approx. 700 shots (at 23°C) with the Viewfinder.

Our Verdict
The long-awaited EOS R1 camera is packed with innovative features for professional photographers and creators who need to nail the shot every time.
