Product Overview

The Sony FX3 combines a 12.1MP Exmor R sensor and BIONZ XR processor in a compact body built for filmmaking. It records 4K at up to 120p with internal 10-bit 4:2:2, S-Log3 and S-Cinetone, while supporting 16-bit RAW output to compatible external recorders.

Active cooling enables extended recording, while five-axis stabilisation and Fast Hybrid AF support handheld and solo shooting. Dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, full-size HDMI and multiple mounting points support production workflows, with the supplied XLR handle adding two full-size XLR/TRS inputs.

The updated FX3A adds a higher-resolution 2.36M-dot vari-angle touchscreen and includes Sony’s BC-ZD1 dual battery charger.

In More Detail

Recording and Image Quality

The 12.1MP back-illuminated sensor records 4K at up to 120p, with internal 10-bit 4:2:2 and XAVC S-I, XAVC S or XAVC HS formats. S-Log3 provides 15+ stops of dynamic range for grading, while S-Cinetone offers a finished look with less post-production. 16-bit RAW data can also be output over HDMI to a compatible external recorder.

Exposure, Colour and Monitoring

Cine EI and Cine EI Quick support workflows based around the sensor’s base ISO settings, while custom LUTs can be imported for monitoring. This allows a graded appearance to be previewed while retaining Log footage for post-production. The updated FX3A features a 3.0-inch vari-angle touchscreen with approximately 2.36 million dots for framing, focus checks, playback and menu control.

Autofocus and Handheld Shooting

Fast Hybrid AF combines phase and contrast detection with Real-time Tracking and Eye AF. AF Transition Speed and Subject Shift Sensitivity provide control over how focus moves between subjects. Five-axis in-body stabilisation supports handheld recording, with Active Mode adding electronic stabilisation when greater correction is needed.

Connections and Production

Active cooling supports extended recording, while threaded mounting points allow compatible accessories to attach directly to the body without a separate cage. Both card slots accept CFexpress Type A or UHS-II SD media, while full-size HDMI supports external monitoring and recording. The supplied handle adds two XLR/TRS inputs with mic, line and 48V phantom power, plus a 3.5mm input.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it Netflix approved?

Yes. The FX3 is included on Netflix's approved camera list for productions that require an approved primary camera. Productions must also follow Netflix's specified capture settings and production requirements, so approval applies to more than the camera body alone.

Has the Sony FX3 been discontinued?

No. The current model is the FX3A (ILME-FX3A), introduced in 2025 with an updated 2.36M-dot LCD monitor and revised supplied accessories. The core imaging and recording capabilities remain consistent with the previous model.

Why does it have a 12.1MP sensor?

The relatively low pixel count is optimised for video rather than high-resolution photography. Approximately 10.3MP are effective when recording movies, while the full-frame back-illuminated design supports high sensitivity, fast readout, 4K high-frame-rate recording and a movie ISO range of 80–102400, expandable to ISO 409600.

Does it have built-in ND filters or an electronic viewfinder?

No. Unlike the larger FX6, there are no built-in electronic variable ND filters, and the compact body does not include an EVF. Framing and monitoring are handled through the vari-angle touchscreen or a compatible external monitor.

Which lens is a good choice for filmmaking?

The camera accepts Sony E-mount lenses, with the choice depending on your production. The FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II is a versatile standard zoom for interviews, events and general filmmaking, while the wider FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II suits handheld, gimbal, interiors and establishing shots. Both maintain a constant f/2.8 aperture throughout their zoom range.

Does it need a cage?

Not necessarily. The body includes five 1/4-20 UNC mounting threads for compatible accessories, allowing monitors, handles and other equipment to be attached without a separate cage. A cage can still be useful for more complex rigs that require additional mounting positions or protection.

Looking to sell your Sony FX3 Full Frame Cinema Line Camera?

Our Verdict

The compact body remains a strong choice for solo filmmakers and smaller productions that want full-frame image quality with serious recording, audio and rigging options. The newer FX5 adds 5K Open Gate, internal X-OCN RAW and higher frame rates, while the FX6 moves towards larger production setups with built-in electronic variable ND.

For filmmakers who demand portability rather than these additional capabilities, the FX3 is a compelling choice and can also serve as a compact B-camera within a larger production setup.
