OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f/2.8 IS PRO Lens Summary

The OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f/2.8 IS PRO Lens brings a unique combination of portability, image quality and low-light capability to Micro Four Thirds users. With a constant f/2.8 aperture across its entire zoom range, this is the world’s only 100-400mm full frame equivalent lens that is this fast, which also offers comprehensive IP53-rated weather resistance.

The MFT zoom lens weighs just 1,075g without the tripod collar, which is ideal for subjects where portability and the ability to handhold provides an advantage, such as for wildlife, sports, and general outdoor photography. It also boasts up to 7 stops of stabilisation through 5-axis Sync IS when paired with compatible camera bodies such as the OM-1 Mark II, which makes it far easier to get sharp results without the need for a tripod or monopod.

The lens is fully compatible with the MC-14 1.4x Teleconverter and MC-20 teleconverter, enabling photographers to reach up to a 400mm focal length (800mm full-frame equivalent) while maintaining autofocus and stabilisation. With close-focusing down to just 0.78m across the whole zoom range and a high maximum magnification of 0.5x (equivalent 1:1 with the MC-20), it’s also really useful for tele-macro of anything from nature and flowers to general close-ups.

The optical design features 21 elements in 13 groups with numerous special lens elements, which help to render edge-to-edge sharpness and suppress chromatic aberrations. The lens also supports focus stacking and 50fps sequential AF shooting, providing the ability to capture diverse content formats. As with other OM System PRO micro four thirds lenses, handling is easy, with four customisable switches and a built-in L-Fn button for quick control, alongside IP53-rated protection against dust, splash and freezing.

OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f/2.8 IS PRO Lens in More Detail

Optical Design Supports High Image Quality

This lens features a complex optical design of 21 elements in 13 groups, including EDA, Super ED, ED, HR and E-HR elements to control aberrations and maintain resolution across the frame. OM System’s ZERO and ZERO Coating II are also applied to suppress ghosting and flare. Together, these help ensure good levels of contrast, with accurate colours even in backlit or high-contrast scenes.

Advanced Image Stabilisation

This lens supports 5-axis Sync IS when used with compatible OM System bodies such as the OM-1 Mark II, offering up to 7 stops of compensation at 200mm. Lens-based IS provides up to 5.5 stops of compensation on other models such as the E-M10 Mark IV. These stabilisation figures make it possible to shoot handheld in a wide range of scenarios, including low-light wildlife or indoor sports.

Teleconverter Support With Tele-Macro Capabilities

A notable feature is the lens’ close-focus ability, which impressively allows shooting down to 0.78m across the whole zoom range. Without converters, the maximum magnification reaches 0.5x equivalent at 200mm, and up to 1:1 macro with the MC-20 at 400mm equivalent. This makes the lens suitable for close-up wildlife, details, and product photography, especially when harnessing OM System’s computational features like in-camera Focus Stacking.

Professional Build Quality and Handling

This model achieves OM System’s PRO status, with IP53 certification for dust, splash and freeze resistance when mounted with a similarly rated camera body. It includes four switches the barrel too:

  • AF limiter
  • Focus mode
  • IS switch
  • L-Fn button

These controls provide quick, intuitive adjustments in the field, while the removable tripod collar is Arca-Swiss compatible, improving universal support on monopods and tripods.

Looking to sell your OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f/2.8 IS PRO Lens?

Our Verdict

The OM System 50-200mm f/2.8 IS PRO lens is for outdoor photographers who need a combination of its classic reach, speed and portability without the weight associated with larger camera systems. It’s particularly well suited to wildlife and nature, but also ideal for sports, events, and close-up photography thanks to its high 0.5x native maximum magnification with universal close focusing. Despite such comprehensive features the zoom weighs just 1,075g without the tripod collar, which is light enough for handheld use, especially given the advanced image stabilisation.

This is also the world’s only fully weather-sealed, all-purpose 100-400 mm equivalent super-telephoto zoom lens with a constant f/2.8 aperture, giving it a unique place in the OM System line-up. You can shoot in low light without raising ISO too far, and maintain control over depth of field at longer focal lengths.

It’s also one of the most versatile options with support for MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters, giving you even more reach and higher magnification when required. The 0.78m minimum focusing distance is unchanged across the zoom range, which allows you to get frame-filling shots of smaller subjects without needing to step back.

If you’re upgrading from an older OM lens or switching systems, this is a great option that lets you shoot all sorts of subjects from near to far. You can begin your journey with our fast and free trade-in quote to make upgrading as simple and cost-effective as possible.
