Nikon D6 Digital SLR Camera Body in detail
The new flagship D6 DSLR from Nikon brings ever faster workflow, power and reliability to the working professional. A truly dependable imaging solution has been designed to fit the demands of professionals, no matter the assignment. The new D6 brings overall faster operating speeds, while increasing the accuracy of areas such as the AF system, along with a host of connectivity options.
Speedy Sensor and image Processor
At the heart of the D6 is a 20.8MP full-frame CMOS sensor working alongside the latest EXPEED 6 image processor. A 180K-pixel RGB sensor, along with ISO 100-102400, expandable to ISO50-3 280 000 ensures images and video have the widest dynamic range, but also the lowest noise levels at even the highest ISO levels.
Industry Defining autofocus System
The camera AF system is now faster and more accurate than ever, featuring 105 all-selectable cross-type sensors. The central focus point is sensitive down to -4.5 EV, while all the points have a value of -4 EV. A wide range of F-mount lenses are catered for with the system, which have more accuracy with smaller apertures such as f/8 compatible with 15 AF points. The phase detection AF provides many different tracking areas, which can be easily selected on camera or via the rear screen, which include Siangle point AF, dynamic-area AF (9 -, 25 -, 49 -, 105 point), 3D-tracking, group-area AF (standard, C1 or C2) and auto-area AF.
The contrast detect autofocus system works for more general areas, which include Face-detection AF, wide-area AF, normal-area AF and subject-tracking AF. The focus starting point can also be selected when shooting in Auto-Area AF, while a subject's eyes can take priority when using Auto-Area AF or 3D tracking.
The metering range covers -3 to 20 EV matrix or center weighted metering, with f/1.4 lens at ISO100. Various metering methods cover both stills and video recording using matrix, centre weighted, spot and highlight metering, with a scene recognition system using both the metering and image sensors.
Speed of Execution
A professional level imaging solution will always need rapidfire speed, which the D6 brings with 14fps with full AF/AE and 10.5fps with AE tracking when using Silent Photography mode.
Speed of workflow has also been increased with picture controls to add a defined look to images in camera. Neutral, vivid, monochrome, portrait and creative picture control all provide a finalised rendering without the need for additional software.
Connectivity
The D6 supplies many options to transfer data or control any aspect of the camera. Built-in 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, with wireless LAN comes as standard, along with Bluetooth and built-in GPS facilities. LAN facilities support the 1000BASE-T standard and are now 15% faster than the D5 model. Location data can also be transferred covering support for GPS (USA), GLONASS (Russia) and QZSS (Japan).
Optical viewfinder
A crystal clear view of the frame is a given with the D6, having a 0.72x optical viewfinder with OLED elements, which can also display role and pitch indicators with 100% magnification. metering and exposure settings are easily displayed, as with AF point selection.
Storage Media
Dual card slots are available which benefit from accepting the fastest read/write and transfer speeds from XQD and CFexpress cards. The dual card slots can be easily configured for overflow data, or even backup storage, with a variety of options of how data is written to each memory card.
Professional Video
Video facilities on the camera come with a wide range of options starting with H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and 4k UHD at 30p. HD video is also available up to 60p, outputted to the MOV/MP4 formats. Electronic vibration reduction is also available with the HD modes, along with focus peaking, timelapse movies, racketeering, exposure, smoothang functions and silent mode. Video can also be monitored via the HDMI output, along with a built-in stereo microphone and speakers or through the external stereo microphone or headphone connectors.

Our Verdict
When Nikon releases a flagship DSLR, professionals sit up and take notice. A worthy successor to the D5, the D6 brings the usual rocksolid camera design, guaranteed to work in the harshest of environments. The 20.82 effective pixels work in conjunction with the speedy EXPEED 6 image processor to provide the latest high speed AF system from the company.
In total, 105 all-selectable cross-type sensors are available with a 1.6x higher density coverage than found on the D5, with more selectable AF patterns than ever before to achieve accurate focus for any given subject or situation.
The ISO range now covers 100-102400, which can be expanded down to ISO 50 for even higher dynamic range, while all the connectivity bases have been covered with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and built-in GPS. LAN support has also been included, which is 15% faster than on the previous D5 body.
Video features have also been provided with plenty of professional built-in options such as H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and 4K UHD at 30p. External connections can monitor audio, with HDMI output for easy monitoring of footage and transfer. In total, the D6 is a considerable evolution of the flagship model with ever more refined features.
