Action, sports and wildlife photographers enjoy high speed continuous shooting with 20fps electronic and 12fps mechanical shutter.
Eye, Face as well as Animal Eye are acquired within 0.05 seconds (when using a number of RF lenses) utilising deep learning from the updated Dual Pixel CMOS II autofocus system. Lens options are limitless with 15 native RF lenses currently available, together with any number of Canon’s huge catalogue of EF and EFS lenses which can be employed with optional lens mount adaptors.
The EOS R5 is weather sealed for outdoor photography and manufactured from durable magnesium alloy providing excellent rigidity and heat dissipation. This allows the camera to record video for a maximum duration of 29min 59sec or 7min 29sec in high speed mode.
High capacity data is recorded using an ultra fast CFexpress card in one slot, whilst the second slot houses an SD card. Power is provided by a new LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery delivering a 17% increase in power over the previous LP-E6N battery, for around 490 shots with the high resolution LCD. Our Verdict
Canon has pulled out all of the stops with their latest flagship mirrorless camera and the EOS R5 fulfils the needs of professionals with class leading video and stills image capture. The 45 megapixel resolution is ample for gallery quality prints and 8K 30p RAW video is a world first in a 35mm sensor body.
Any style of photography is catered for, including low noise for architecture, fine art or landscape and ultra fast shooting for sports, action and wildlife. Portrait, street and wedding photographers will also benefit from a deep learning autofocus system which recognises subjects instantly, acquiring eye, face or body depending on the situation. Blistering continuous shooting speeds in both mechanical and electronic shutter ensure every moment is captured with the full coverage AF system. With up to 180 RAW and 350 JPGS photographers can shoot through entire action sequences capturing every single perfect moment.
Video recording is both advanced and flexible providing complete versatility starting with the impressive headline 8K 30p. Movie makers also get 120p in full-frame 4K for spellbinding slow motion effects, zebra patterns and 12bit RAW capability. Adding personal styles during edits is simple with Canon log 10bit HEVC and all of this is processed by the high speed DIGIC X engine.
A CFExpress card with a second SD card slot are most welcome, catering for the high volumes of data being captured. In-body stabilisation provides between 6.5 and 8 EV stops of compensation depending on which RF lens is being used for world class hand-held advantage. High quality materials and a weather sealed body add to the long list of pro features ensuring many years of service from this mirrorless body. The EOS R5 is amongst the most powerful content creation tools available today thanks to innovative upgrades throughout virtually every element of the camera.
