Summary

The EOS R8 Mark II and RF 45mm F1.2 STM make a compact full-frame kit for portraits, street photography, lifestyle content and everyday creativity. The natural 45mm perspective suits a wide range of subjects, while the bright f/1.2 aperture gives far more control over depth of field and subject separation within the EOS R system.

A 24.2MP sensor works with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and deep-learning subject detection, backed by 40fps continuous shooting, pre-continuous capture recording up to 20 frames from the previous half-second, and up to 7.5 stops of in-body stabilisation for steadier handheld photos and video.

The prime weighs just 346g, keeping the combination easy to carry despite its bright maximum aperture. A 9-blade diaphragm helps create smooth background blur, while STM autofocus provides precise focusing when working with shallow depth of field.

4K/60p is oversampled from 6K, Full HD reaches 180p, and Canon Log 3 gives more room to grade. A deeper grip and dedicated AF Multi-controller round out a creative setup that’s easy to take anywhere.

In More Detail

A bright prime for everyday creativity

At 78 x 75mm, the RF 45mm F1.2 STM is a compact and easy to carry bright prime. Nine elements in seven groups include an aspherical element, with Canon’s Super Spectra Coating helping maintain contrast and colour accuracy.

Separate focus and control rings allow direct adjustment without diving into menus. Focusing reaches as close as 45cm for 0.13x maximum magnification, and compatible bodies can apply focus-breathing correction when recording video, helping maintain consistent framing as focus shifts.

Full-frame image quality

The larger sensor allows for shallower depth of field, while an ISO range of 100 to 102,400 gives flexibility as light fades, useful for portraits, travel and everyday content. Sensitivity can be expanded to ISO 50 and 204,800 at either end, with DIGIC X processing supporting image quality and performance throughout.

Advanced in-body stabilisation

For anyone upgrading from the original R8, 5-axis sensor-shift stabilisation now works in the body itself rather than depending solely on lenses with optical IS. This is very useful for slower shutter speeds and steadier handheld video in low light.

Correction reaches up to 7.5 stops at the centre of the frame and 7.0 stops towards the edges, and compatible stabilised RF lenses coordinate optical IS with IBIS for even greater effect.

Ultra-fast shooting

40fps keeps pace with pets, wildlife, sport or anyone on the move. Pre-continuous shooting adds a safety net, capturing up to 20 frames from the half-second before the shutter is fully pressed, while the buffer sustains approximately 190 JPEG or 73 RAW images with the electronic shutter for longer bursts.

A maximum 1/16,000 sec shutter speed gives further scope for freezing rapid movement or shooting wide apertures in bright light.

Intelligent autofocus

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and deep-learning subject detection track automatically, leaving you free to concentrate on timing and composition. AF coverage extends to virtually 100% of the frame horizontally and vertically, with recognition for people, dogs, cats, birds, horses, racing cars, motorbikes, aircraft and trains. Focusing sensitivity reaches as low as -7.5 EV for very dim conditions, and subject switching sensitivity lets you tune how readily tracking moves between subjects. The dedicated AF Multi-controller offers a quick way to position the AF point manually.

Advanced video features

4K/60p is oversampled from 6K for detailed footage with smoother motion rendering, and Full HD extends to 180p for slow motion. Canon Log 3 adds grading flexibility, with up to 10-bit 4:2:2 recording and XF-HEVC S and XF-AVC S formats for hybrid workflows. Focus-breathing correction is available with compatible lenses to help maintain consistent framing during focus transitions, and Register People Priority along with dedicated movie functions give further control when people are the subject.

Creative colour

In-camera creative controls shape the look of stills and video before you open an editor, with 16 colour filters and adjustable intensity from 0 to 100% in 10% increments. NegativeFilmtone and PositiveFilmtone extend the range, from softer, lower-contrast looks to stronger saturation and contrast, giving plenty of scope for a distinctive style straight from the camera.

Intuitive handling

A larger, deeper grip gives a more substantial hold despite the small body, and the SD card now has its own side-access compartment separate from the battery, making cards easier to swap, especially on a tripod. A 2.36-million-dot OLED viewfinder offers refresh rates up to 120fps, while the 3-inch 1.62-million-dot vari-angle touchscreen makes it easy to compose from high, low and front-facing angles. At approximately 499g body only, it remains remarkably portable for a full-frame model.

Sharing and connectivity

Built-in 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 connect easily to a smartphone through Camera Connect, for image transfer or Canon’s image.canon cloud service. USB-C adds direct computer connectivity and charging, plus UVC/UAC support for video calls and livestreaming at up to 4K/60p, a simple way to use the camera for high-quality live content without a separate capture device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose the 45mm F1.2 kit rather than buying the body on its own?

It gives you a bright prime from the outset, with an f/1.2 aperture for stronger background blur, subject separation and shooting in lower light. The 45mm focal length is also versatile enough for portraits, street photography, food and everyday subjects.

How does this compare with the 24-105mm kit?

The 45mm F1.2 is the more creative choice if you want a bright aperture and shallow depth of field, while the 24-105mm gives you the flexibility to zoom from wide-angle to short telephoto. Choose the prime for its distinctive look and low-light ability, or the zoom if covering more subjects with one lens is the priority.

Is 45mm a good focal length for portraits?

Yes. It gives a natural perspective that works well for environmental portraits, couples and wider compositions, while f/1.2 lets you soften distracting backgrounds. For tighter headshots you may prefer a longer focal length, but 45mm is very flexible for photographing people in their surroundings.

Does the lens have image stabilisation?

The lens itself doesn’t have optical IS, but the camera has 5-axis in-body stabilisation, so you still benefit from sensor-shift correction when shooting handheld.

I’m new to photography, is an f/1.2 lens difficult to use?

It doesn’t have to be. Autofocus can find and track your subject while you concentrate on composition, and you don’t need to shoot at f/1.2 all the time. As you gain confidence, experimenting with wider apertures is a great way to explore depth of field and how backgrounds affect an image.

Can I use this setup for video too?

Yes. It records 4K/60p oversampled from 6K and Full HD up to 180p for slow motion, while Canon Log 3 gives you more flexibility when grading. The 45mm lens uses STM autofocus, and focus-breathing correction is available in-camera to help keep framing more consistent during focus changes.
