Fujifilm GF 55mm f/1.7 R WR Lens Summary
To coincide with the launch of the Fujifilm GFX 100 II Medium Format Digital Camera Body, Fuji has released this new standard Fujifilm GF 55mm f/1.7 R WR Lens, under their Fujinon brand. Its compact design and special optics render beautiful results with a full-frame equivalent focal width of 44mm.
This is no coincidence as it corresponds precisely to the GFX sensor’s diagonal length, providing an intuitive field of view for natural framing and composing. As with all Fujifilm medium format lenses, the GF 55mm f/1.7 includes exceptional optics, which cater to 100+ megapixel GFX medium format cameras.
Separating your subject from distractions while creating beautiful bokeh is effortless thanks to a combination of medium format depth of field, along with this lens’ bright f/1.7 aperture and 11 rounded diaphragm blades. Special aspherical and ED glass lenses also reduce aberrations, which can sometimes appear in bokeh, resulting in silky smooth and clean defocus areas.
Photographers who harness Fuji’s hybrid AF, which is found in the latest medium format mirrorless cameras are covered by a powerful DC motor, which works together with a GMR sensor (Giant Magneto Resistance). The lens is fully compatible with face and eye subject detection and tracking, which benefits photographers and creators who capture anything from portraits and fashion to weddings, street photography and moviemaking.

Fujifilm GF 55mm f/1.7 R WR Lens in More Detail
Advanced optical design
Fuji’s GF55mm F1.7 R WR lens consists of 14 lens elements in 10 groups, including two ED elements and two aspherical elements, which deliver high image-resolving performance and creamy bokeh.
The lens features optimally positioned aspherical elements and makes generous use of the eight-element focusing lens group, including one of the aspherical elements and two ED elements. This effectively controls shifts in chromatic aberration, spherical aberration and comatic aberration when the focusing position changes to deliver a soft creamy bokeh and advanced image-resolving performance, characteristics of large-aperture lenses.
The maximum f/1.7 aperture and the optical design complement the larger format image sensor to create creamy bokeh and advanced descriptive capability. Users can enjoy the full appeal of the sensor in genres ranging from day-to-day snapshots to full-fledged indoor and outdoor portraiture.
Beautiful bokeh and background defocus
The aspherical elements in the lens are manufactured with extraordinary precision, utilising mould processing with a tolerance of 1/100,000th of a millimetre. There are two such elements strategically placed within the lens design, and one is situated just behind the aperture ring to manage spherical aberration and create a pleasing background blur.
The second aspherical element is located closer to the lens mount at the rear, controlling the path of light to ensure sharpness from edge to edge in the captured images.
Accurate and pleasing colour rendition
The focusing lens group comprises eight elements, incorporating one aspherical element and two ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) elements. This design results in exceptional image resolution throughout the entire focusing range. It effectively minimises axial chromatic aberration, producing smooth and aesthetically pleasing bokeh with subdued colour tones. This improvement elevates the quality of bokeh, a distinctive feature of large-aperture lenses designed for use with large-format sensors.
Ultra high resolution from near to far
Typically reserved for cinema camera lenses, high refractive elements which suppress aberration fluctuation are used as the front element, and also in the focusing group to reduce aberration. This controls spherical aberration and reduces performance shifts that occur with the movement of the focusing group. This helps to maintain advanced image-resolving performance regardless of focusing positions.
11-bladed aperture
This is the first GF lens to use 11 diaphragm blades to achieve a near-perfect circle in the aperture. This contributes to the lens’ ability to produce rounded bokeh even when the lens is stopped down slightly from being wide open, creating beautiful bokeh in a wide variety of photographic scenes.
Evolved DC motor for fast and accurate autofocus
Fujifilm's GF 55mm f/1.7 R WR lens employs a DC motor to precisely control the focusing group, which includes the aperture unit and eight elements. The motor enables swift and precise autofocus, particularly valuable when shooting with a shallow depth-of-field. This ensures that photographers can seize critical photographic moments with confidence and precision, especially when paired with the latest deep learning AF found in cameras such as the GFX 100 II.
Weather sealed design
Dust and weather-resistance is achieved through the lens barrel being weather-sealed in nine places, and the lens can be operated at temperatures as low as -10℃.

Our Verdict
Fuji is bolstering the range of exceptional medium format lenses with the addition of this new standard focal width 55mm prime. Due to the medium format sensor size, it provides an equivalent 44mm focal width in full-frame format, which equates to a 52.9º angle of view.
Being extremely close to the human eye field of view makes this the perfect option for a huge variety of subjects, including as a walk around lens for everyday snapshots. It’s also the same as a GFX sensor’s diagonal length, which provides a natural angle of view for composing and framing for extremely intuitive shooting.
Despite being extremely compact at 780g, the Fujifilm GF 55mm f/1.7 R WR Lens houses an advanced optical design with special ground glass elements which not only render high-resolution, but reduce aberrations and image artefacts for clean, sharp results.
The bright 11-bladed aperture and special glass help to create gorgeous bokeh and distinct subject separation, which is ideal for portraits or any subject, which warrants a shallow depth of field.
A fast DC focus motor responds quickly and quietly, whilst also being fully compatible with the latest AI-driven focus capabilities found in the latest GFX cameras. Although there are comparable primes available, none offer the same combination of speed and focal width as the GF 55mm f/1.7 R WR Lens, which is sure to tempt photographers and filmmakers who crave the highest possible image quality for their craft.
