Product Summary
The bright f/5.6 maximum aperture and extensive reach make this particularly well suited to birds, wildlife, aircraft and outdoor sport, where subjects may be small, distant or difficult to approach. Its low weight for the focal length also makes handheld shooting and changing position considerably more practical in the field.
Balance has been carefully considered, with heavier optical elements positioned towards the rear to reduce the feeling of weight at the front when tracking and panning. Optical stabilisation provides up to 5.5 stops of compensation, while the linear motor works with subject-recognition capabilities in compatible X Series bodies for responsive, quiet focusing.
Dedicated controls help when subject distance changes quickly. The limiter can restrict the focusing range to improve acquisition, while Focus Preset allows a previously stored distance to be recalled instantly. For subjects that demand still more reach, both XF teleconverters are supported.

As with comparable Fujifilm X lenses the XF 500mm f/5.6 R LM OIS WR can be paired with 1.4x/2.0x teleconverter for even greater reach, and the 500mm prime is comprehensively weather sealed in 20 places to repel dust and moisture. Additional benefits include an Arca-Swiss compatible tripod foot mount and the ability to add 95mm lens filters to further enhance image quality or protect the lens.
In More Detail
Extensive reach, and then some
With a full-frame equivalent of 762mm, this prime from Fujifilm offers the ability to capture a broad range of distant subjects, including portraits of birds, wildlife in their natural habitat, and sports action.
Using the XF 1.4x and XF 2.0x Teleconverter, you can extend the focal length to an impressive 1067mm and 1524mm respectively, with just a one-stop (1.4x) or two-stop (2.0x) reduction in light. This added flexibility provides ample opportunities to photograph very shy or distant wildlife, small birds, or even close-up shots of the moon.
A prime lens at this range offers the benefits of a more compact design, reduced weight, and superior image quality in part due to fewer elements being required to adjust the focal length. IN this case, the XF 500mm f/5.6 weighs just 1,335g, and is rear-weighted for better handling and easier panning when tracking birds in flight or fast-moving athletes for example.

Advanced optics with high resolving power
It features an optical design with 21 elements in 14 groups, including 5 ED and 2 Super-ED elements. This configuration ensures sharp, high-contrast images right to the edges of the frame. Chromatic aberrations are also well controlled, reducing colour fringing and artefacts in high-contrast or backlit scenes.
5.5-stops OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation)
The built-in image stabilisation compensates for up to 5.5 stops of camera shake, allowing slower shutter speeds and lower ISO settings when shooting handheld. This is particularly useful in low-light situations, such as sunrise or sunset when photographing wildlife in their habitat.

Fast and quiet AF
A linear focus motor delivers near-silent autofocus, which can be crucial for photographing shy wildlife or during a sporting event. The AF mechanism works seamlessly with AI-driven AF systems, and the focus limiter and memory functions speed up subject acquisition when shooting at a more standardised range.
Robust build and usability
The lens is equipped with weather sealing at 20 points and a fluorine-coated front element for added protection from dirt and smears. Additionally, the Arca-Swiss compatible lens foot provides far easier tripod or monopod mounting, while the 95mm lens filter thread adds further versatility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it on any X Series camera?
Yes, it uses the X Mount and can be fitted to compatible X Series bodies. Pairing it with a recent model that offers subject detection can provide additional assistance when following birds, animals and other recognised subjects.
What happens to the aperture with a teleconverter?
Adding the 1.4x converter reduces the maximum aperture to f/8, while the 2x combination becomes f/11. Both provide substantially greater reach, with the trade-off of less light reaching the sensor.
Can I attach it directly to an Arca-type tripod head?
Yes. The supplied foot has an Arca-type dovetail, allowing direct attachment to compatible clamps without adding a separate quick-release plate.
What is Focus Preset useful for?
It lets you store a focusing distance and return to it quickly. This can be useful when you know a subject is likely to appear at a particular location, such as a perch, nest area, goal or section of a track.
Can I use it for handheld shooting?
Yes. Its relatively low weight, rear-biased balance and built-in stabilisation make handheld use practical, although a monopod or tripod can still be valuable during long sessions or when waiting in one position.

Our Verdict
This is a specialist choice for photographers who regularly need substantial reach but don’t want the bulk traditionally associated with a long prime. The combination of manageable weight, effective stabilisation and thoughtful balance makes it particularly compelling for wildlife and bird photography where mobility can be just as valuable as outright optical performance.
The XF 100-400mm and 150-600mm remain more flexible choices when subjects regularly change distance, whereas this prime trades zoom versatility for a brighter aperture and dedicated 500mm optical design. Remarkably, it is also lighter than either zoom, giving photographers who predominantly work at the long end another strong reason to choose it.
If you’re considering selling some of your unwanted camera equipment to trade-up to this 500mm, why not grab a fast and free trade-in quote from us, and we’ll take all of the hassle out of selling your old gear.
