GoPro MISSION 1 Compact Cinema Camera Summary

The GoPro MISSION 1 Compact Cinema Camera introduces a new category for GoPro, moving beyond traditional action cameras into higher-end cinematic and creator-focused production. It combines a 50MP 1-inch sensor with the new GP3 processor, enabling 8K30 Open Gate recording, 4K120 video and significantly improved low-light performance compared to previous HERO Black models.

Unlike GoPro’s standard action camera range, the MISSION 1 prioritises image quality, thermal management and extended recording times for creators filming longer-form projects, travel content, documentaries and commercial work. The larger sensor captures more detail with lower visible noise than smaller sensors, while Open Gate recording creates additional flexibility for reframing vertical, horizontal and social formats from the same clip. Waterproofing to 20m without a housing also maintains the practical durability expected from GoPro systems.

GoPro MISSION 1 Compact Cinema Camera In More Detail

1-Inch Sensor

The new 1-inch sensor captures significantly more light than previous HERO Black cameras, helping maintain cleaner detail in low-light scenes and higher dynamic range across shadows and highlights. The larger sensor also improves overall image depth and texture, particularly in night scenes, interiors and mixed lighting environments.

GP3 Processing

The GP3 processor introduces approximately double the pixel processing performance of previous GoPro systems. This additional processing power supports higher resolutions, faster frame rates and more advanced real-time image processing, including improved noise reduction algorithms for low-light shooting.

Open Gate Recording

MISSION 1 records Open Gate video in a taller 4:3 aspect ratio at up to 8K30. Compared to traditional widescreen recording, this captures additional image area above and below the frame, giving editors more flexibility when reframing for vertical social media, YouTube or cinematic delivery formats without needing separate takes.

Thermal Performance

GoPro has focused heavily on thermal optimisation and sustained recording performance with the MISSION series. Combined with the GP3 processor and larger Enduro 2 battery, the camera supports longer continuous recording times than previous GoPro models, including approximately three hours at 4K30 and up to 1.5 hours at 8K30 according to GoPro figures.

Rugged Camera Design

Although positioned as a cinema-focused compact camera, the MISSION 1 maintains GoPro’s rugged construction and waterproofing. The body is waterproof to depths of 20m without requiring an additional housing, making it practical for travel, documentary, outdoor and water-based filming where larger cinema systems are less practical.
