Hasselblad XCD 90V f/2.5 Lens Summary

The Hasselblad XCD 90V f/2.5 Lens delivers impeccably across all fronts, from the upgraded leaf shutter capable of flash sync at any speed up to the maximum 1/4000sec. The short telephoto prime lens also resolves over 100 megapixels and is capable of faster and quieter AF, thanks to a new stepper motor. These features have been designed in order to cater to a new breed of ultra high resolution cameras for the formidable Hasselblad X system, which includes the flagship X2D 100C medium format camera.

The XCD 90V f/2.5 is the longest in a trio of MF lenses released simultaneously, and provides an equivalent focal width of 71mm (in full-frame format). This is ideal for a range of subjects with the wide maximum aperture being well suited to portraits, whether in the studio or on-location in the field.

The upgraded leaf shutter is fast and quiet, complemented by a newly designed focusing module which delivers quick and accurate focusing. The lens also includes a focus ring and a customisable lens control ring and changing between AF and MF is achieved by a convenient push and pull of the focus ring.

Key Features

  • Optical design which resolves over 100 megapixels
  • Bright aperture short telephoto prime with 71mm equivalent focal width (full-frame format)
  • Minimum object distance of 0,67m to image plane
  • Customisable control ring and aperture ring with stepped and stepless value adjustment
  • H Logo etched rings for good grip and branding
  • New shutter unit and linear stepper AF motor which is quicker and quieter
  • Compact 72mm filter thread
  • Push – Pull for quick changes between AF To MF with distance scale as well as DOF scale
  • Compatible cameras X2D 100C, X1D 50C, X1DII 50C, 907X (including 907X anniversary kit)

In MF mode you can easily check the focus distance and DOF readings and the aperture ring offers step and stepless adjustment when required.

A new breed of XCD lenses

An updated optical design in the XCD 2,5/90V lens includes 9 lens elements arranged in 6 groups, with one aspherical element. The entrance pupil position is 68mm in front of the image plane, which is the correct position of the axis of rotation when making a panorama image by combining individual images of a scene. When images are imported to Phocus, distortion is automatically removed for quicker post processing.

Three XCD lenses were released simultaneously, with this model, which are a wide angle Hasselblad XCD 38V f/2.5 Lens and standard Hasselblad XCD 55V f/2.5 Lens. Together they provide ultra-high resolution, a uniform filter thread, wide maximum aperture and new features for professional photographers working in the studio and in the field.

Precision Hasselblad optics for outstanding images

The Hasselblad lens is able to capture the most subtle nuances of light and shadow, with excellent resolution and colour reproduction. A medium format camera sensor has a large area with high pixel density, posing stringent requirements for the precision of the lens. Starting with the selection of high-quality glass, Hasselblad engineers carefully grind each lens to perfect its optical quality and meet the resolution requirements of 100 million pixels.

The XCD 2,5/90V lens features nine elements in six groups, including one ED element and one specially made large-diameter aspherical element. Through this design, the lens is both compact in size and also improves light transmittance and suppresses chromatic dispersion, for stunning results.

New Fast, light and accurate focusing module

The upgraded focusing module in the Hasselblad XCD 2,5/90V lens includes a linear stepping motor and a lighter, smaller focusing lens group. These effectively eliminate any backlash from the lens group moving and, coupled with the PDAF technology of the X2D 100C, mean the focusing lens group can quickly reach the focusing position and achieve a precise stop. The result for photographers is fast, flexible and accurate focusing.

Powerful smaller leaf shutter

The leaf shutter is a powerful component in Hasselblad's medium format system and the XCD 2,5/90V lens is equipped with an upgraded leaf shutter which, despite being smaller, maintains the same precision performance as its predecessors. In addition, this ultra-compact shutter delivers flash synchronisation at all speeds up to 1/2000s.

Intuitive control

The lens is comfortable to use and intuitive in the hand, fully supporting rather than distracting from your creative process and the focus and control rings are fine-tuned for a smooth and satisfying experience. A simple push and pull of the focus ring changes from AF to MF mode, where intuitive scale marks keep focus distance and DOF clear at a glance. The control ring can be customised for quick access to preferred features, resulting in a more convenient and efficient shooting experience.

Familiar, yet new aesthetic

The XCD 2,5/90V is a precision-crafted metal lens with a focus ring and a newly added control ring, both of which are delicately engraved with a Hasselblad "H" logo. The design is created using a precise 0.3mm drill bit and is a nod to the memorable look of the HC/HCD lenses. Whether paired with X-system or 907X cameras, this new lens is both a homage to the past while standing on its own as a unique, elegant statement.

Looking to sell your Hasselblad XCD 90V f/2.5 Lens?

Our Verdict

Hasselblad has been busy developing new XCD lenses to meet the demands of higher resolution sensors and faster workflows. This short telephoto XCD 90V f/2.5 Len is the longest of the three, which provides an equivalent 71mm prime focal width, ideal for subjects such as detail shots, portraits, fashion, lifestyle and travel. HSS is available across all shutter speeds to a maximum 1/4000sec, thanks to an extremely quiet upgraded leaf shutter.

Continuing the theme of fast and quiet, Hasselblad has also designed a new stepless AF system, which keeps pace with the latest developments in phase-detect autofocusing found in the X2D 100C camera.

A customisable control ring and adjustable aperture ring ensure more efficient shooting, while a convenient push-pull mechanism allows you to quickly switch between AF and MF for critical focus. Naturally the XCD 2,5/90V also looks beautiful, with signature Hasselblad design quality, attention to detail and ‘H’ logos etched into rings for ergonomic and aesthetic purposes. If you shoot close-up images this compact prime focuses on subjects as close as 67cm to the image plane, which is ideal for wedding detail shots and many other subjects. The new breed of XCD lenses provide an extremely compelling reason to grow your collection, whether upgrading from a previous 90mm or as a new lens designed to capture beautiful, high resolution images.
