Product Summary

The Leica D-Lux 8 Metal Grey Paint Finish is a premium compact within Leica’s camera range, offering physical exposure controls, DNG capture and a built-in zoom in a body that’s easy to carry every day. This edition adds a more understated exterior with matching FN buttons, contrasting black controls and textured leatherette.

The Leica DC Vario-Summilux 10.9-34mm f/1.7-2.8 ASPH. lens covers a 24-75mm equivalent range, moving from travel, street and wider scenes through to portraits and details. A 4/3-inch sensor supports JPEG and DNG capture, while the supplied compact flash adds fill light for indoor portraits and shooting after dark.

Overview of Design Updates

The photographic specification is unchanged from the standard Leica D-Lux 8, so the choice comes down to finish. Metal Grey paint is paired with black controls and a diamond-patterned leatherette covering, bringing it into the same collection as the Leica Q3 Metal Grey and M11-P Metal Grey. Coordinated cognac leather accessories are also available separately.

In More Detail

Design And Handling

This model continues Leica’s minimalist compact camera approach with direct controls, a simplified user interface and a compact body intended for everyday photography. The camera includes a touchscreen display, OLED electronic viewfinder and physical control layout that prioritises quick operation without extensive menu navigation.

This Metal Grey Paint Finish version introduces matching FN buttons, black controls and a diamond-style leather covering shared with the Leica Q3 and M11-P Metal Grey models. The compact dimensions make the camera particularly well suited to travel, everyday carry and casual photography where a larger interchangeable lens system may feel excessive.

Leica DC Vario-Summilux Lens

The integrated Leica DC Vario-Summilux 10.9-34mm f/1.7-2.8 ASPH lens provides a 24-75mm equivalent focal range covering wide-angle, standard and short telephoto perspectives within a single compact camera.

Its fast aperture range supports lower-light shooting and stronger background separation than most compact cameras, while the zoom range remains versatile for travel photography, portraits, street scenes and everyday subjects. The combination of the lens and 4/3-inch sensor also contributes to the more recognisable Leica rendering style associated with the D-Lux series.

4/3-Inch CMOS Sensor

It uses a 4/3-inch CMOS sensor with 21MP total resolution and 17MP effective resolution, supporting both JPG and DNG recording formats. RAW support allows photographers greater editing flexibility while maintaining the simpler operation expected from a compact Leica camera.

The camera also supports 4K video recording for hybrid users producing both stills and short-form video content from a single everyday camera setup.

Leica FOTOS Connectivity

Wireless integration with the Leica FOTOS app allows images to be transferred directly to a smartphone or tablet for sharing, remote operation and mobile editing workflows. This integration helps bridge the gap between Leica’s traditional camera handling and more modern connected shooting workflows.

For many users, the combination of compact size, simplified controls and fast wireless transfer makes the camera particularly practical for travel, lifestyle and day-to-day photography.

Included Compact Flash

A compact external flash unit is included in the box, extending the D-Lux 8’s flexibility for indoor photography, portraits and lower-light conditions. The flash also supports more creative lighting techniques including second curtain synchronisation for motion-based effects.

Unlike many premium compact cameras where accessories are optional extras, the inclusion of the flash gives photographers additional lighting flexibility immediately out of the box.

Accessories and Personalisation

A range of matching accessories are available alongside the Metal Grey version including a cognac leather camera case, braided wrist strap and braided carrying strap. These accessories continue Leica’s focus on compact everyday carry systems while allowing photographers to customise the camera’s appearance and handling style.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is anything different apart from the Metal Grey finish?

No. The photographic specification is the same as the standard version, including the sensor, lens and main shooting features. The differences are cosmetic, with Metal Grey paint, matching FN buttons, contrasting black controls and a diamond-patterned leatherette covering.

How does it compare with the Leica Q3?

The Q3 steps up to a full-frame sensor and fixed 28mm f/1.7 lens, whereas this model uses a smaller 4/3-inch sensor and 24-75mm equivalent zoom. The latter is considerably more affordable and gives you more framing flexibility without changing position.

What can I shoot with the 24-75mm zoom?

It covers a useful everyday range. At 24mm there’s room for landscapes, architecture, interiors and street scenes, while 75mm provides tighter framing for portraits and details. Everything in between is available without changing lenses.

Why does it come with a separate flash?

There’s no flash built into the body, so Leica supplies a compact unit that attaches when needed. It’s useful for adding fill light to portraits or working indoors and after dark, but can be left at home when you want to travel as light as possible.

Can I shoot RAW as well as JPEG?

Yes. Images can be recorded as DNG files for more control over exposure, colour and other adjustments afterwards, or as ready-to-use JPEGs when you’d rather keep post-processing to a minimum.

Are there accessories to match this version?

Yes. Leica offers coordinated accessories including a cognac leather case, braided wrist strap and carrying strap, allowing the Metal Grey body to be paired with accessories from the same collection.

Looking to sell your Leica D-Lux 8 Compact Digital Camera Metal Grey Paint Finish?

Our Verdict

The Leica D-Lux 8 Metal Grey Paint Finish offers a practical entry point into Leica’s compact camera range without compromising on handling quality or direct control. The Vario-Summilux zoom lens covers a genuinely useful 24-75mm equivalent range, and the combination of DNG support, OLED viewfinder and fast maximum aperture gives the camera more capability than its compact dimensions suggest. The included flash unit supports indoor portraits and lower-light shooting without requiring additional accessories.

The Metal Grey finish, black controls and diamond-pattern leather covering align it visually with the Q3 and M11-P Metal Grey models, making it a natural companion camera or strong standalone option for photographers who want Leica handling in a lighter, more portable format. It suits travel, lifestyle, street and everyday photographers who want direct manual controls and RAW shooting flexibility in a camera small enough to carry consistently.

Park Cameras offers a trade-in service enabling you to sell your camera equipment and use the money to offset against the Leica compact range.
