Product Summary
Capture all of the action with one lens.
The Nikon Z 120-300mm F2.8 TC VR S is the first constant-aperture super-telephoto zoom to include a built-in teleconverter, combining an internal zoom with professional S-Line construction. The integrated converter extends the focal range from 120-300 mm to 168-420 mm at F4, providing greater flexibility for sports, motorsport and wildlife photography without switching glass.
Advanced optics deliver exceptional sharpness and contrast, supported by fast, quiet Silky Swift VCM autofocus and up to 6.5 stops of Vibration Reduction. Internal zoom and focusing maintain consistent handling throughout the range, while weather-sealed construction and a 515 g weight saving over its F-mount predecessor make this a compelling choice for demanding professional assignments.
Constant F2.8 For Low Light
The constant F2.8 aperture lets you maintain faster shutter speeds and lower ISO values as light fades, from floodlit stadiums to dawn at a hide. It also isolates your subject cleanly against a smooth, softly blurred background, rendering greater separation.
Premium Optical quality
The optical construction combines fluorite, Super ED and SR glass to suppress chromatic aberration and colour fringing, keeping fine detail and natural colour across the frame. Meso Amorphous Coat reduces reflections from multiple directions, and ARNEO Coat cuts ghosting and flare from light entering at the front. Together they protect contrast when shooting into low sun or under bright stadium floodlights. The rounded nine-blade diaphragm gives pleasing, natural-looking out-of-focus areas.
Autofocus and stabilisation
The Silky Swift Voice Coil Motor delivers fast, precise and quiet focusing, working with the subject detection and tracking capabilities of compatible Nikon Z cameras to follow unpredictable movement.
Up to 6.5 stops of Vibration Reduction, with Synchro VR when paired with a compatible body, helps keep long handheld sequences sharp.
Normal and Sport VR modes are available, with stabilisation also supported when using a tripod or monopod.
Advanced Handling
An internal zoom and focus design keeps the length constant and the centre of gravity steady, which makes handheld tracking more comfortable and means tripod or monopod setups rarely need rebalancing. Separate rings control zoom, focus and a programmable function, which can also be assigned to focusing. The control ring can be switched between clicked and smooth operation for stills or video.
Two L-Fn buttons put key settings within reach. The Memory Set button saves a chosen focus position, which can be recalled instantly using the Fn ring.
Built for long assignments
It is sealed against dust and moisture, while the fluorine coating helps keep dirt and fingerprints off the front element. At approximately 2,735 g, it is a noticeable weight saving for photographers moving up from the F-mount 120-300mm F2.8, which makes a real difference in the field.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is this best suited to?
Professional sports, motorsport and wildlife photography, particularly when subjects move between different distances.
What filters are compatible?
The front accepts 112 mm screw-in filters, while the supplied rear holder accommodates compatible 46 mm filters. An optional C-PL460 slip-in circular polariser provides additional control over reflections.
How does it compare with the Z 400mm F2.8 TC VR S?
The prime delivers F2.8 at 400 mm and extends to 560 mm at F4. Choose the zoom for changing subject distances and flexible framing, or the prime when maximum reach and a faster aperture at longer focal lengths take priority.
Should I choose this or the Z 180-600mm F5.6-6.3 VR?
The 180-600 mm offers greater reach at a considerably lower price and weight, making it attractive for wildlife photography. However this premium alternative excels in challenging light, where faster shutter speeds, lower ISO settings and stronger subject separation are priorities.
Can I use it with DX-format cameras?
Yes. The 1.5x crop provides a 180-450 mm equivalent field of view, extending to 252-630 mm with the integrated converter engaged.
Is it suitable for professional filmmaking?
Yes. Quiet autofocus, internal zoom and a de-clickable control ring support sports coverage, documentaries and distant action. The fixed barrel length maintains consistent balance on supported rigs, although a fluid head is advisable for extended recording.
Can I use additional teleconverters?
Yes. The optional Z TC-1.4x and TC-2.0x are both compatible, providing additional reach for distant subjects.
Is it worth upgrading from the F-mount version?
For photographers using the mirrorless Z system, native mounting removes the need for an FTZ adapter. The integrated converter, updated optical technologies and approximately 515 g weight reduction also make this a substantial upgrade.
