Product Overview

The Z9 is Nikon’s flagship professional mirrorless camera, built around a 45.7MP stacked FX sensor and EXPEED 7 processor. It combines a fully electronic shutter, blackout-free viewing and fast subject-detection autofocus with an integrated vertical grip for demanding stills work including sport, wildlife and reportage.

Internal 8.3K/60p N-RAW and 4K/120p recording provide advanced video capabilities, while the high-capacity EN-EL18d battery supports longer shoots.

In More Detail

High-Speed Shooting and Autofocus

The fully electronic shutter enables silent shooting without viewfinder blackout, while 3D Tracking and subject detection help maintain focus on fast, unpredictable subjects. Pre-Release Capture buffers images before the shutter is fully pressed, helping with difficult-to-time action.

Professional Video

Internal N-RAW provides high-resolution footage for demanding post-production, alongside N-Log, waveform monitoring and shutter-angle control. A full-size HDMI connection provides a secure connection to external monitors and recorders.

Professional Handling and Workflow

The integrated vertical grip provides duplicate controls for portrait-orientation shooting, while the EN-EL18d battery supports longer assignments. Dual CFexpress Type B slots, wired LAN and FTP support high-volume capture, backup and direct file transfer.

Nikon has continued to expand the Z9 through firmware updates, adding features and improvements across autofocus, video, Auto Capture, customisation and connectivity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it compare with the Z8?

Both share a 45.7MP stacked FX sensor and EXPEED 7 processor, so many core shooting capabilities are similar. The flagship model adds an integrated vertical grip, larger EN-EL18d battery, dual CFexpress Type B slots and built-in wired LAN. The Z8 is smaller and lighter.

Which lenses are compatible?

NIKKOR Z full-frame and DX lenses can be mounted directly. F-mount NIKKOR lenses can also be used with an FTZ or FTZ II Mount Adapter, although available functions vary by lens.

Does it take SD cards?

No. Both card slots accept CFexpress Type B and XQD cards, so photographers moving from an SD-based system will need compatible media.

Does it have a mechanical shutter?

No. Stills are captured using a fully electronic shutter, eliminating mechanical shutter wear and enabling silent operation.

How long can it record 8K video?

Nikon rates continuous 8K UHD/30p recording at up to approximately 125 minutes under specified conditions. Actual recording time varies with settings, temperature, battery level and available storage.

When was this camera released?

Nikon announced the camera in October 2021, with sales beginning later that year.
