Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 ASPH Lens in More Detail
Compact and lightweight design for MFT
The lens weighs just 130g with a compact 55mm filter thread, and when combined with a camera such as the Panasonic Lumix GH6, the total weight is around 950g. This creates a highly portable set-up which is capable of capturing ultra-wide landscapes as well as close-up 1:2 macro shots.
Ultra-wide perspective
With a 100° diagonal angle of view, the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 ASPH Lens is the widest prime in the entire Panasonic lens range, aside from the 8mm Lumix G Fish-eye lens. This presents the perfect lens for wide angle subjects such as landscapes, interiors and architecture, as well as a close-up subjects with 1:2 magnification (half-macro). The FOV (field of view) is far wider than the Lumix G Macro 30mm, to complement this existing macro lens, rather than replacing it. You can capture wider backgrounds with a large subject for close-ups, drawing on high quality Leica glass to achieve excellent quality throughout the image.
Designed for content creators
As well as being a proficient photography lens, the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 is an excellent option for hybrid shooters and video-centric creators. You can set the coordination between focus ring operation and the amount of focus movement with supported cameras, choosing between linear and non-linear focusing. This allows you to adjust focus ring acceleration and rotation between 90 and 1080 degrees, with camera such as the DC-GH6.
Focus breathing is also well controlled, with minimal discernible focus shift when pulling focus from near to far. Micro-step aperture control also aids videographers, with smooth exposure changes, cementing this lens as a great choice for hybrid creators.

Our Verdict
Panasonic is forging ahead with new products for the micro four thirds system, with this Leica DG Summilux 9mm f/1.7 ASPH Lens following hot on the heels of their flagship GH6 camera release. They are made for each other, with the camera fully supporting focus adjustments and linear/non linear settings, which is ideal for video capture. The lens is the widest ultra-wide angle prime which Panasonic has released aside from their Fish-eye option, but also brings 1:2 macro to the table. This allows you to capture subjects suited to an 18mm equivalent focal width such as landscapes, while also using the same optic for close-up macro work.
Panasonic designed a bright maximum f/1.7 aperture for the 9mm, which provides a number of advantages, including the ability to gather more light during low light situations. You’ll also see smoother backgrounds and excellent background separation when your subject is closer to the lens. This is particularly useful as the close minimum focus distance is just under 10cm, which provides further versatility for creating dynamic shots.
Outdoor creators are catered for by dust and moisture resistance, as well as the inclusion of an easy-to-maintain fluorine coating on the front element. Despite packing all of these features, the ultra wide prime weighs just 130g, making it light enough to bring an any shoot, which is ideal for photography and videography applications.
