Panasonic Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 Macro Zoom Lens Summary

A staple of ultra wide-angle versatility for photos and videos, the Panasonic Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 Macro Zoom Lens is a budget-friendly full-frame L-Mount lens. The zoom range provides ample opportunity to capture anything from epic sweeping landscapes to environmental portraits, as well as close-ups and video.

Despite its compact size and low 345g weight, the Lumix S 14-28mm lens houses a series of high quality optical elements for sharp details and beautiful bokeh, whilst effectively suppressing chromatic aberration. Macro capabilities change from 0.25x at the ultra wide end of the zoom, through to 0.5x at 28mm, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.15m throughout the entire zoom range.

You can enjoy smooth, silent operation and customary linear / non linear adjustment as well as rotational sensitivity, which provides outstanding control over focus performance, as we have come to enjoy from the latest Panasonic lenses.

Panasonic Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 Macro Lens in More Detail

Great results from a high quality optical design

The Lumix S 14-28mm F4-5.6 Macro is composed of 14 lens elements, arranged in 10 groups. This optical formula includes one aspherical ED (Aspherical Extra-Low Dispersion) lens, one aspherical lens, three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses and one UHR (Ultra High Refractive Index) lens. Employing aspherical lenses renders sharp detail and beautiful bokeh, while the three ED lenses effectively suppress chromatic aberration, which is particularly beneficial when capturing subjects with high contrasting edges.

Versatile macro and close focusing capabilities

The Panasonic Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 Macro Zoom Lens boasts 0.25x (at 14mm) to 0.5x (at 28mm) macro capability, despite its compact length of 89.8mm diameter and low 345g weight. You can also take advantage of the minimum focusing distance, which is just 0.15m through its entire zoom range, enabling the ultra wide-angle lens to be used for close-up shots with beautiful bokeh.

Great zoom option for video

The 14-28mm F4-5.6 Macro also excels when recording video, offering professional-level features which include micro-step aperture control, resulting in smooth exposure changes and a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing. Focus breathing can present an issue when recording movies with interchangeable lenses, which have been designed for stills photography. The lens is capable of smooth, silent operation, working with your L-Mount camera high-speed, high-precision AF system. When recording with the non-linear setting, focus is shifted with a variable amount according to the rotation speed of the focus ring, whereas for the linear setting, focus is shifted with a designated amount according to the rotational quantum of the focus ring. The amount of focus shift per rotational quantum (also known as Sensitivity), can be adjusted from 90º to 360º, giving the user outstanding control over focus performance.

Rugged construction for outdoor creators

A rugged dust and splash-resistant design ensures the S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 Macro is suitable for use in harsh conditions, right down to -10º Celsius. Panasonic also applied a fluorine coating to the front lens element, which helps repel oil and water and makes it easier to clean your lens with a lens cloth and other camera cleaning accessories.

Compact size with uniform balance

This model and the Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 lens feature a common overall length and control positioning to provide practical advantages. The weight and centre of gravity of these lenses is almost identical, allowing users to exchange lenses quickly with minimal balance adjustment when the camera is mounted on a gimbal or stabiliser rig. Lens filters can be attached via the 77mm diameter filter thread.

Wide choice of L-Mount zoom lenses

At the time of launch, Lumix S content creators have three cost-effective zoom lenses to choose from, covering the popular 14mm ultra wide-angle through to 300mm telephoto range. These are the latest Lumix S 14-28mm F4-5.6 Macro, Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 and Lumix S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Macro O.I.S. All three offer high optical performance and great mobility when attached to Lumix S5 series cameras.

Looking to sell your Panasonic Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 Macro Zoom Lens?

Our Verdict

Arriving as Panasonic’s third affordable zoom for the L-Mount, the Lumix S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 Macro is a versatile lens, with an ultra wide-angle zoom range ideal for a number of situations. The compact lens excels whether you want to capture landscapes, cityscapes, environmental portraits or videos, and weighs just 345g ensuring it never gets left behind. The short length which is just a hair under 90mm allow it to be used in tight situations, while a 0.15m minimum focusing distance delivers exaggerated perspectives and opportunities for creative close-up shots.

Macro capabilities are great for close-up work, with 0.25x at the ultra wide-angle end of the zoom and 0.5x at the 28mm end. The S 14-28mm f/4-5.6 Macro is also sure to impress content creators who record video, with the effects of focus breathing being greatly reduced, the inclusion of micro-step aperture control along with fast, silent operation, which won’t ruin your scenes through focus motor noises. You can adjust focusing between linear and non linear settings, as well adjusting the focus ring throw to suit your style and subjects, with a compatible camera body. If you’ve been deliberating over a new wide angle zoom this model is hard to beat and will complement any existing L-Mount lenses perfectly.
