Panasonic Lumix S l-mount PRO 70-200mm f/2.8 O.I.S Telephoto Zoom Lens Summary
The newly announced full-frame Lumix S PRO 70-200mm f/2.8 O.I.S lens from Panasonic compliments the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 16-35mm f/4 lens. Both are the latest additions to the L-mount range of lenses, forming two of the three trinity workhorse zooms, which make up many photographers primary focal lengths.
The Lumix 70-200 has been developed from the Leica and Sigma alliance, and Panasonic have developed this latest addition to wear their PRO badge of quality. This ensures the highest possible optical results with the inclusion of several image enhancing elements. This optical design includes no less than 22 elements in 17 groups, yet weighs only 1570g, which is relatively light for such a complex design. Quality is optimised with the inclusion of 1 aspherical element to reduce aberrations, 3 ED lenses enhancing contrast and sharpness as well as 2 UED lenses, which keep down weight and improve image quality even further.
70-200 is a classic focal zoom range which is versatile enough for many photographic subjects. These include portraits, weddings, landscapes and even closer wildlife shooting. With the fast and bright constant aperture this lens is ideal in any low light situations. Optical stabilisation further enhances hand-held shooting abilities, which will be most welcome to the majority of users. The design is made up with 11 diaphragm blades which is very impressive and ensures beautiful smooth bokeh for out of focus areas.
The lens has a focal range from 94cm to infinity, allowing photographers to get extremely close to their subjects. This creates new possibilities of macro-style shooting as well as capturing pin sharp subjects along a than focal plane, with plenty of smooth background. The lens has been constructed to be dust and splash proof, ideal for outdoor shooting and has a large 82mm filter thread for the addition of rings or filters.

Our Verdict
This classic telephoto range makes for a workhorse zoom lens and will be appreciated by many photographers working across a broad range of subjects. Panasonic are busy developing a number of PRO series high quality lenses for their L-mount bodies and the addition of this model demonstrates this commitment to full-frame going forward. Being one of a trinity of desirable focal lengths along with the new 16-35 will inspire broad appeal for photographers considering moving to Panasonic along with existing users wanting to upgrade. The addition of optical stabilisation and bright aperture ensure anyone hand holding will produce fantastic results throughout the entire range.
