Ricoh GR IV Monochrome Compact Camera Summary
The Ricoh GR IV Monochrome is a fixed-lens compact camera made exclusively for black and white photography. It joins the Ricoh GR IV and GR IV HDF models, sharing the same tried-and-tested platform while replacing the colour sensor with a monochrome-dedicated APS-C size sensor.
Unlike colour cameras that convert images to black and white after capture, the GR IV Monochrome records brightness information directly at pixel level. This results in clearer edge definition, smoother tonal transitions and more consistent rendering across highlights and shadows. A built-in red filter and monochrome-specific Image Control options provide additional control over contrast and tonal separation at the point of capture.
The camera still benefits from the GR series approach to being ultra portable and fast to operate, combining a compact body with controls for responsive shooting. It is aimed at photographers who work primarily in black and white and want consistent monochrome output without relying on post-processing conversion, and will suit street, reportage, landscape and city amongst other genres.

Ricoh GR IV Monochrome Camera in More Detail
Image quality and monochrome philosophy
The GR IV Monochrome features a monochrome-dedicated APS-C sensor without a colour filter array or optical low-pass filter. Each pixel records brightness values directly, rather than interpreting colour data before conversion. This produces clearer fine detail, more predictable contrast and smoother tonal transitions across midtones and highlights.
The absence of colour interpolation also changes how noise and grain appear at higher sensitivities. Instead of colour noise, images show a luminance-based grain structure that is consistent across the frame. This is further shaped through dedicated Image Control options, including modes that prioritise edge definition or visible grain, which is more reminiscent of traditional black and white prints.
A built-in red filter operates at capture rather than as software simulation. When enabled, it darkens blue skies, lifts red tones and increases separation between similar luminance areas, allowing photographers to adjust contrast without any post-processing.
Autofocus performance
Autofocus is the same as other cameras in the GR IV range, with a hybrid system that combines phase and contrast detection. This supports fast subject acquisition and reliable focus in everyday shooting situations. Snap Distance Priority modes allow predefined focus distances, enabling immediate capture without waiting for autofocus confirmation.
Camera response time is another defining characteristic of the GR series with short start-up times, controls that respond instantly and usable ergonomics even shooting single-handed.
Video recording
Video recording is available in Full HD resolution. While video is not the primary focus, the monochrome sensor produces consistent tonal rendering without colour artefacts. Exposure control and stabilisation are available in video mode, supporting handheld recording if necessary.
Handling, controls and ease-of-use
The GR IV Monochrome has a matte black finish on the body, controls and details. The power indicator illumination has been changed to white, distinguishing the monochrome from colour models. The control layout is unchanged, and will be very familiar to existing GR users.
The camera features high capacity internal storage, with 53 GB included, which is enough for roughly 900-1,000 RAW files, depending on settings. This allows for extended shooting without a memory card.
The compact camera also uses the same battery system as other GR IV variants. Wireless connectivity supports image transfer and remote control through Ricoh’s companion app, enabling simple integration into existing workflows.
