Samyang AF 85mm f/1.8 P FE Lens for Sony E Summary
The Samyang AF 85mm f/1.8 P FE Lens for Sony E is a compact and lightweight short telephoto prime for full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras. It is one of three ‘Prima’ series lenses from Samyang, which are portable, practical and convenient.
With a fast f/1.8 9-blade aperture, it delivers strong subject separation and smooth background blur, which is a classic formula for portrait photography, subject-driven shots and low-light. The 85mm focal length offers a natural perspective and good compression, and APS-C users gain a closer 127.5mm equivalent crop.
The updated optical formula includes nine elements in eight groups, with one high refractive (HR) and three extra-low dispersion (ED) elements to reduce aberrations and maintain sharp, colour-accurate results across the frame. Samyang’s UMC multi-coating minimises flare and ghosting, helping maintain contrast in tricky lighting. Autofocus is good too, and powered by a smooth and quiet linear STM motor, with an AF/MF switch for manual focus intervention.
Despite its bright aperture and high-quality optics, the lens weighs just 322g including the hood, and measures only 71.5mm long. The lens accepts 62mm threaded filters and is a great size for walk-around shooting, street and other candid subjects.

Samyang AF 85mm f/1.8 P FE Lens for Sony E in More Detail
One of a trio of Prima lenses
Samyang has developed three models in the current Prima lens series including the first to arrive, which was the AF 35mm F/1.4 P FE Lens For Sony E. This is joined by this AF 85mm f/1.8 P FE Lens and the ultra wide AF 16mm f/2.8 P FE Lens, creating a versatile set of hybrid lenses for high-quality stills and video content creation.
Compact Portrait Prime
The Samyang AF 85mm f/1.8 P FE is a short telephoto lens for Sony full-frame E-mount cameras, which provides a natural perspective with pleasing compression for portraits and subjects that benefit from a selective depth of field. On APS-C cameras it provides a 127.5mm equivalent field of view for framing from slightly further away.
Bright f/1.8 Aperture
With a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture, this lens enables shallow depth of field and strong subject separation, which is what makes it such a great option for portraits. Samyang has included a 9-blade diaphragm, which produces smooth bokeh, with rounded highlights in out-of-focus areas with point light sources.
Reliable Autofocus
A linear STM motor delivers fast, quiet autofocus and the lens exhibits well controlled focus breathing, which makes it suitable for both photography and video. It also supports manual override via the AF/MF switch for precise focus control when needed.
Refined Optical Formula
Samyang’s optical design includes 9 elements in 8 groups, with three ED elements and one HR element to reduce colour fringing and maintain edge-to-edge clarity. A UMC coating is used to help control internal reflections, flare, and ghosting, even in high-contrast situations.
Lightweight and Convenient
Measuring just 71.5mm long and weighing 322g with the hood, the AF 85mm f/1.8 P is very portable for an 85mm prime lens. It uses a smaller 62mm filter thread and balances well on full-frame and Sony APS-C bodies for portraiture, street photography, and low-light video.
