Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG Contemporary Lens Silver for L Mount Summary

The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG Contemporary Lens Silver for L Mount is one of Sigma’s redesigned I Series range, which combines great optical performance with a compact and highly portable design. Weighing just 295g and measuring 59.7mm, this is Sigma’s smallest 90mm lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras to date. It’s a great option for photographers who want high-quality results without carrying a heavier prime lens around.

The versatile 90mm focal length works well for portraits, weddings, street photography, family photos, and travel. Its bright f/2.8 maximum aperture makes it possible to achieve shallow depth-of-field with smooth background blur, and the light-gathering ability helps when handheld shooting in lower lighting conditions.

The optical design consists of 11 elements in 10 groups, including one aspherical and five SLD elements, which are used to minimise chromatic aberrations and maintain sharpness across the frame. Sigma’s Super Multi-Layer Coating also helps to reduce flare and ghosting, producing vibrant colour and contrast even in backlit conditions.

The L Mount lens has an all-metal body, which is made from precision-cut aluminium and features a smooth aperture ring, focus ring, and sturdy metal lens hood. Sigma includes a magnetic metal lens cap alongside a standard plastic cap, adding strength when working in the field. This compact short telephoto prime is compatible with full-frame and APS-C L Mount mirrorless cameras from Sigma, Panasonic, and Leica, and it offers excellent portability with impressive image quality.

Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG Contemporary Lens Silver for L Mount in More Detail

Premium Quality in a Portable Design

The Sigma 90mm f/2.8 DG Contemporary is from Sigma’s I Series for full-frame mirrorless L mount cameras. It combines a newly developed optical design with a lightweight metal exterior and durable build quality.

The short telephoto prime lens weighs just 295g and measures 59.7mm long, making this updated model Sigma’s smallest ever 90mm full-frame lens and an appealing option for photographers who want professional results without carrying a heavy portrait lens.

The bright f/2.8 aperture allows you to create shallow depth-of-field with smooth background separation and provides more flexibility when shooting handheld in low light. The 90mm focal length is especially suited to portraits, producing a classic perspective, but it is also great for travel, street, family, and wedding photography, as well as video.

High Build Quality

As with other lenses in Sigma’s I Series range of Contemporary compact primes, the 90mm f/2.8 features an all-metal construction made from precision-cut aluminium parts. The solid build offers durability and a premium feel while keeping weight down for comfortable handheld use. The lens includes a knurled finish on the focus ring, aperture ring, and lens hood, which top-off the premium feel.

A dedicated aperture ring allows you to set exposure on the lens, or you can switch to Auto mode and control aperture via the camera instead. The mount is constructed from coated brass for added strength, while a rubber seal around the mount provides some resistance to dust and moisture when shooting outdoors.

Supplied in the box are both a standard plastic lens cap and a premium magnetic metal lens cap, improving usability in the field. The lens hood is also made from metal to match the overall design.

High-Performance Optics

Despite its compact size, the Sigma 90mm f/2.8 delivers excellent optical performance. The optical construction consists of 11 elements arranged in 10 groups, including one aspherical element and five SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements. These work to minimise chromatic aberrations and maintain sharpness across the entire frame.

A Signature Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to suppress flare and ghosting, which renders images with vibrant colours, rich contrast, and clarity, even when shooting in strong backlighting. Vignetting is also minimal, even at the widest f/2.8 aperture, while chromatic aberration is well controlled in high contrast areas of the image.

Perfect for Portraits

With its 90mm focal length, this lens sits close to the classic portrait range and offers flattering perspective for head-and-shoulder compositions when standing at a natural working distance. The f/2.8 aperture allows for excellent subject separation, while the nine rounded diaphragm blades deliver smooth, attractive bokeh.

Two Portrait Options for L Mount

In Sigma’s L Mount lineup photographers have a choice between this 90mm f/2.8 and the 85mm f/1.4 DG DN | Art. Compared to the 85mm Art lens, which weighs 630g and measures 94.1mm in length, the 90mm f/2.8 is significantly lighter and smaller, weighing just 295g and measuring 59.7mm. This makes it a superb option for photographers who prefer a more compact and portable kit.

However, the 85mm f/1.4’s faster maximum aperture is better suited to handheld shooting in low light and for creating an even shallower depth-of-field, making the definitive choice between the two for absolutely premium results.

Magnetic Lens Cap Holder

Sigma offers an optional magnetic lens cap holder accessory, which can clip securely onto clothing or a camera bag. This allows you to store any I Series magnetic lens cap safely while the camera is in use, keeping it protected and close to hand.
