Sony ECM-VG1 Shotgun Electret Condenser Microphone Summary
The Sony ECM-VG1 sits within Sony’s professional audio range as an affordable shotgun microphone for filmmakers, broadcasters and content creators who require clear directional audio without adding significant weight to their camera or boom pole.
Weighing just 66g, it combines a super-cardioid pickup pattern with a wide 40Hz to 20kHz frequency response for natural voice reproduction while reducing unwanted off-axis sound. A switchable low-cut filter helps minimise handling, traffic and wind noise, and the supplied rigid-frame windscreen improves outdoor recording in challenging conditions.
Requiring standard 48V phantom power, the ECM-VG1 is compatible with Sony Cinema Line cameras, professional camcorders, mixers and recorders equipped with balanced XLR microphone inputs.
Sony ECM-VG1 Shotgun Electret Condenser Microphone In More Detail
Clear directional audio for video production
The ECM-VG1 uses a super-cardioid pickup pattern to capture sound primarily from directly in front of the microphone while reducing unwanted background noise from the sides and rear. This makes it well suited to interviews, documentaries, news gathering, corporate video and independent filmmaking where isolating speech is important.
Natural sound reproduction
A wide frequency response of 40Hz to 20kHz captures everything from low vocal tones through to subtle high-frequency detail. Combined with its high sensitivity of -33dB and signal-to-noise ratio of at least 76dB, the microphone records clean, natural dialogue while maintaining low self-noise of 18dB SPL or less, helping quieter recordings remain usable without excessive background hiss.
Lightweight for camera or boom operation
At approximately 66g and measuring only 210mm long, the ECM-VG1 adds very little weight to compact camcorders, cinema cameras or boom poles. Its metal construction provides durability for regular production work while helping maintain good handling balance during handheld or shoulder-mounted shooting.
Built-in low-cut filter
A two-position low-cut filter allows unwanted low-frequency noise to be reduced before recording. This can help minimise traffic rumble, air conditioning, handling vibration and wind noise, reducing the amount of corrective processing required during editing.
Phantom powered professional connectivity
The microphone operates from standard 40 to 52V external DC power, including the widely used 48V phantom power supplied by professional cameras, mixers and audio recorders. Its balanced XLR output provides reliable signal transmission over longer cable runs while helping reduce electrical interference on location.
Outdoor recording with supplied windscreen
Sony includes a specially developed windscreen featuring an internal support frame that maintains an air gap around the microphone capsule. This construction helps suppress wind noise more effectively than conventional foam covers while also reducing contact noise when working outdoors in demanding shooting environments.
Compatibility
The ECM-VG1 is suitable for Sony professional camcorders and Cinema Line cameras with XLR audio inputs or compatible XLR handle units, including models such as the FX6, as well as other professional cameras, mixers and field recorders that provide 48V phantom power. An XLR microphone cable is required and is not supplied.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Sony ECM-VG1 require batteries?
No. The ECM-VG1 operates from external 40 to 52V DC phantom power, typically the standard 48V phantom power supplied by professional cameras, audio recorders and mixers.
Is the microphone suitable for outdoor filming?
Yes. It includes a rigid-frame windscreen that helps reduce wind noise during location recording while also providing some protection against handling and contact noise.
Can I use it with Sony Cinema Line cameras?
Yes. It is compatible with Sony Cinema Line cameras that provide XLR microphone inputs or compatible XLR handle units supplying 48V phantom power, including cameras such as the Sony FX6.
Is this microphone good for interviews?
Yes. The super-cardioid pickup pattern helps isolate a presenter or interview subject while reducing surrounding ambient noise, making it suitable for interviews, documentaries and ENG recording.
Does an XLR cable come in the box?
No. An XLR microphone cable is required but is not included.
What is the advantage of the low-cut filter?
The low-cut filter reduces unwanted low-frequency sounds such as wind, handling vibration, traffic and air conditioning, helping produce cleaner recordings directly from the camera.
