Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS Lens in More Detail
G Master optical design
As one of Sony’s flagship G Master lenses, the FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS delivers exceptional sharpness, clarity and minimised optical aberrations. The optical design features 17 elements arranged in 13 groups, which include two extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements that minimise chromatic aberration, and two extreme aspherical (XA) elements that maintain edge-to-edge sharpness while suppressing distortion. The use of XA elements also helps to create smooth, natural bokeh, which is enhanced by the 11-blade circular aperture.
Sony’s advanced Nano AR Coating II is applied to reduce the effects of flare and ghosting, even in backlit conditions when shooting towards the sun.

Professional magnification
This macro lens gets even closer than 1:1 magnification by reaching up to 1.4x maximum magnification natively, which enables even more detailed close-ups of insects, flowers, textures, and other tiny subjects. For even greater reach, it is compatible with the Sony 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverter, extending maximum magnification up to a staggering 2.8x.
The minimum focus distance is also just 0.26m, giving you plenty of working range whether you are shooting at true macro distances or capturing more creative close-up stills and video.
Lightning fast focus
Autofocus is driven by Sony’s XD Linear Motor system, which is found in high-end lenses like the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II. This system generates high thrust while remaining extremely quiet and very precise, ensuring fast and accurate focusing, even when elements need to move significantly at this level of telephoto reach.
The internal floating focus design keeps operation consistent across the focusing range while maintaining the lens’s balance. Full-time DMF (Direct Manual Focus) is also supported, allowing you to make instant manual adjustments without switching from AF mode.

Perfect for stills and video
The FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS includes built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation, which combines with in-body Active Stabilisation on compatible Sony Alpha cameras for stable handheld shooting. This is particularly useful at high magnifications where even tiny vibrations can affect sharpness.
The XD focus system is near-silent, , while Linear Response MF provides a natural manual focus feel. The lens is also compatible with Sony’s Active Stabilisation system, which compensates for camera shake during video recording, especially when in motion.
Compact professional lens design
Despite its advanced optics and high magnification, this is a relatively compact macro lens, which weighs 646g and measures 81.4 x 147.9mm, with a 67mm front filter thread for attaching UV, CPL or other creative filters.
The mount is a sealed for dust and moisture resistance, which supports reliable outdoor use during poor conditions. A bayonet-style hood provides extra protection and shade when shooting in bright conditions, reducing the effects of incidental light.

Our Verdict
The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS is a professional prime lens that targets enthusiasts and professional creators. If you capture macro subjects such as insects and plants through to product photography, it offers more than the existing FE 90mm Macro thanks to its advanced G Master optical design, faster autofocus and enhanced 1.4x magnification. Add the optional 2.0x teleconverter and you have a unique lens, which is capable of reaching an impressive 2.8x life-size reproduction, which few full-frame lenses can match.
Hybrid creators gain a new macro lens which is adept at video, with autofocus which is both quiet and responsive, effective OSS for steadier handheld recording, and an 11-blade aperture design, that produces attractive bokeh and smooth defocus. With Sony cameras such as the A9 III and A1 II now capable of 120fps bursts and high-speed 4K recording, this lens is well matched to the latest and future Alpha bodies.
The FE 70-200mm f/4 Macro G OSS II offers impressive 0.5x magnification across its zoom range, but lacks the bright f/2.8 aperture and the magnification of the 100mm. For Sony photographers who need the highest levels of macro detail, with G Master optics and professional handling, the FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS is an unbeatable option.
If you’re upgrading you can get a fast and free quotation for trading in your unwanted camera gear and use the money to offset against this Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 Macro GM OSS Lens.
