Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens Summary

The Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens is the second in a new series of fast zoom lenses, which combine G Master build quality and optical performance, while covering several classic prime focal lengths in a single lens. It follows the popular FE 28-70mm f/2 GM, offering an even more versatile zoom range that spans 50mm, 85mm, 105mm and 135mm, which is ideal for subjects as diverse as portraits, weddings, indoor sports and events.

Where traditional zoom lenses can fall short of prime lens image quality, the 50-150mm f/2 GM from Sony features a refined optical design with several special elements, which deliver edge-to-edge sharpness, even when shooting close to the minimum focus distance and across the entire aperture and zoom range.

With a one-stop advantage over an f/2.8 professional zoom, this newly developed 50-150mm lens excels for low light shooting, and produces beautifully rounded, smooth bokeh, rendered by an 11-blade circular aperture. The wide f/2 aperture design also enables excellent subject separation and soft focus transitions, helping to separate your subject from background distractions.

This full-frame Sony E mount lens is equally suited to stills and video content, benefitting hybrid creators with its quad XD linear motors for fast, precise and quiet AF performance. It also boasts well corrected focus breathing, and support for breathing compensation with compatible Sony E mount cameras.

Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens in More Detail

Next generation zoom lens

Following on from the 28-70mm f/2 GM, the Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens offers a versatile zoom range with next-generation capabilities. Combining some of the most popular prime focal lengths this lens covers a variety of professional subjects, which would typically require slower zooms or a series of prime lenses.

With just a single zoom lens, photographers and hybrid creators can now cover portraits, indoor sports, weddings, events and fashion or lifestyle, catering to clients who demand the very best from them. This means there is no time wasted or missed opportunities while switching lenses, allowing you to stay more portable and agile in any situation.

Despite being a zoom, this generation of G Master lenses delivers impressive image quality, bokeh and versatility, which was previously unheard of. It is also perfect for handheld shooting with a lightweight 1340g design (excluding the tripod foot) and compact dimensions measuring 102.8mm wide and 200mm long. This is very similar to the existing FE 70-200mm F/2.8 GM OSS II, which is just a hair thinner and around 300g lighter.

New G Master optical design

The Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM lens features a new advanced optical design, comprising of 19 elements arranged in 17 groups. This incorporates two Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) and three ED glass elements to effectively suppress chromatic aberrations, ensuring exceptional clarity and colour accuracy. Additionally two XA (Extreme Aspherical) and two aspherical elements work in unison to minimise spherical aberrations and distortions, delivering outstanding resolution and sharpness across the entire zoom range.

A floating focus mechanism enhances the lens’s close-up capabilities, enabling a minimum focusing distance of 0.4 metres at the wide end and 0.74 metres at the telephoto end. This internal focusing system not only contributes to the lens’s compact size, but also maintains consistent optical performance throughout the focus range.

The lens resolves Sony’s highest-resolution sensors, such as the 60+ megapixel sensors found in the A7R V and A7CR II, ensuring corner-to-corner sharpness even at its maximum f/2 aperture. To combat flare and ghosting, which is especially prevalent in backlit situations, Sony has applied its highly effective Nano AR Coating II. This advanced coating uniformly covers large or highly curved elements, reducing internal reflections and enhancing contrast and clarity in the most challenging lighting conditions.

Beautiful bokeh and depth of field

With a newly developed 11-blade circular aperture unit, the FE 50-150mm f/2 GM produces smooth, rounded bokeh that adds a natural depth and 3D quality to images. The use of XA (extreme aspherical) lens elements helps to suppress onion-ring artefacts in bokeh, while careful control of spherical aberrations ensures out-of-focus areas are clean and free from distractions.

Compared to f/2.8 zooms such as the Sony FE 70-200mm F/2.8 GM OSS II and FE 24-70mm F/2.8 GM II Lens, the difference in background blur at f/2 is visible, particularly when shooting portraits or highlighting subjects at mid-telephoto focal lengths. The wider aperture allows backgrounds to fall away more quickly and smoothly, making it easier to separate your subject while maintaining focus, even in complex scenes.

Stunning close-up performance

The FE 50-150mm lens also offers strong close-up performance, and is ideal for capturing shots of wedding tables, event settings and similar subjects. With a minimum focusing distance of just 0.4m at the wide end and 0.74m at the telephoto end, the lens allows subjects to fill the frame without needing to step back.

An impressive maximum magnification ratio of 0.2x adds to its versatility, enabling tighter framing ands greater details. This is supported by a floating focus mechanism that maintains consistent sharpness and resolution across the entire focus range, for excellent optical performance, even at closer distances.

Quad linear AF motors

With four powerful XD linear focus motors the lens is fast, price and extremely quiet when focusing and tracking subjects. Heavy lens elements are driven at high speeds, allowing the lens to keep pace with 120fps in burst shooting, which is available in cutting-edge cameras such as the A9 III.

Even at these high speeds the lens is able to track, zoom and focus simultaneously, improving your chances of capturing decisive moments while shifting composition for even the fastest paced action.

Smooth natural focus racking

Subdued focus breathing and smooth autofocus with linear response allow for natural transitions and smooth focus racking with the Sony FE 50-150mm GM. Critical focusing is easy, even at high frame rates and when capturing 4K 120fps footage, and the lens is perfect for gimbal mounting thanks to the internal focus mechanism.

Built for demanding workflows

As we’ve come to expect from G Master lenses, which often end up in the hands of working professionals, the 50-150mm offers numerous lens barrel controls, that can be customised to suit individual workflows. These are:

  • Focus hold buttons (x3) – Customisable buttons positioned for easy access in different orientations
  • Aperture ring – Offers direct control over aperture with tactile feedback
  • Zoom ring – Adjusts focal length smoothly across the 50–150mm range
  • Focus mode switch – Instantly switch between AF and manual focus
  • Full-time DMF switch – Enables manual focus override while in AF-C mode
  • Iris lock switch – Locks the aperture ring in auto or manual to prevent accidental changes
  • Aperture click switch – Enables or disables aperture clicks, ideal for video and silent shooting

Reliable for fieldwork

The lens is well-suited to demanding conditions outdoors thanks to its dust and moisture-resistant design. All buttons and switches are sealed with silicone rubber gaskets, and there’s a rubber ring around the E-mount for protection from the elements.

A fluorine coating on the front element helps to repel dust, fingerprints and smudges, while also making it easier to clean. Sony has also designed a new lens hood design with a built-in filter window, allowing quick access to rotate 95mm filters such as a circular polariser or variable ND without removing the hood. A hood release button is included to prevent it from loosening accidentally during use.

Looking to sell your Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM Lens?

Our Verdict

If you shoot in low light, and want to cover several prime focal widths with a single fast zoom lens, the Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM could be perfect for your needs. As well as catering to standard and portrait focal lengths, it offers an advantage over an f/2.8 lens, by allowing an extra stop of light to reach the sensor. The zoom range and fast aperture are ideal for all sorts of subjects such as portraits, fashion, lifestyle, weddings and events, as well as others, which working photographers often shoot.

For professionals who are used to 50mm, 85mm, 105mm and 135mm prime lenses, the 50-150mm f/2 GM offers a chance to streamline your kit while still achieving extremely high G Master image quality, and surprisingly low weight. With a single zoom users can also save on lens changes by covering multiple focal lengths, while still benefiting from G Master build quality, refined bokeh, and super-quick AF and tracking.

It’s especially compelling for hybrid creators who need consistent performance for photo and video content, and for anyone who shoots with a brighter aperture for subject separation or low-light subjects.

Whether you’re replacing a set of primes or adding a fast zoom to your kit, the Sony 50-150mm f/2 GM is perfect for creative professional use and adds flexibility without needing to make compromises on image quality.
