Product Overview

Positioned between the FX3 and FX6, the FX5 combines a newly developed 16.6MP stacked Exmor RS sensor with BIONZ XR2 processing and an integrated AI Processing Unit. Fast sensor readout reduces rolling shutter, while 5K Open Gate provides more freedom to reframe footage for different aspect ratios in post-production.

Internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW supports demanding grading workflows, with three Base ISO settings of 800, 4000 and 12800 for production across varied lighting conditions. At launch, recording reaches 5K/60p, 4K/120p and Full HD/240p, with 5K/120p and 4K/240p planned through a future firmware update.

Professional monitoring tools, dual card slots and extensive wired and wireless connectivity support solo operators and larger production crews.

In More Detail

Imaging and Recording

Open Gate uses the full 3:2 sensor area at up to 60p, leaving more room to reframe, stabilise or create different aspect ratios in post-production. An optical low-pass filter helps suppress moiré and false colour in fine textures and repeating patterns.

Anamorphic workflows are supported by real-time de-squeeze monitoring for 1.3×, 1.5×, 1.6×, 1.8× and 2.0× lenses.

X-OCN is available in LT, C1 and C2 variants, with C1 and C2 producing smaller files than LT to reduce storage and transfer requirements. XAVC All-Intra and Long GOP formats provide alternatives for productions that do not require RAW.

Exposure and Image Quality

More than 15 stops of dynamic range with S-Log3 provide latitude for high-contrast scenes and colour grading, including matching footage with BURANO, VENICE and other compatible cameras.

Three Base ISO settings cover controlled lighting, available-light and night shooting, while Dual Gain technology helps reduce noise in darker areas and retain shadow detail.

Autofocus and Stabilisation

Fast Hybrid AF uses up to 759 phase-detection points, with AI subject recognition for people, animals and birds. Priority modes help tracking remain on a chosen subject type, while AF Transition Speed, AF Subject Shift Sensitivity and AF Assist provide additional control during movie recording.

Five-axis in-body stabilisation is supplemented by Active and Dynamic Active modes, allowing operators to trade some field of view for stronger correction during handheld shooting.

Operation and Monitoring

CineAlta-style menus and customisable controls provide a familiar interface for crews working across Sony’s professional cinema range. The 3.5-inch four-axis LCD can be repositioned for handheld, tripod, gimbal and low-angle shooting, while built-in monitoring tools reduce reliance on an external monitor for many setups.

Audio and Connectivity

The optional XLR-H2 Handle Unit adds balanced XLR inputs with recording at up to 96kHz/32-bit float and is available separately or with selected kits.

Dual card slots support relay recording, simultaneous backup and separate proxy files. A full-size HDMI Type A connection supports external monitoring and compatible RAW recorders, while FTP transfer and live streaming up to 4K/60p support remote delivery workflows.

Connectivity includes 2.4GHz, 5GHz and 6GHz Wi-Fi with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.3 and Ethernet up to 2.5GBASE-T. The Monitor & Control app supports wireless monitoring and remote or multicamera operation from compatible devices.

Two USB-C ports allow accessory, data and USB Power Delivery connections to be used simultaneously.

Expansion and Reliability

Seven 1/4-20 UNC mounting points allow accessories to be attached with less reliance on a cage. An optional OLED viewfinder, XLR Handle Unit (XLR-H2) and VMC-BNCU1 Timecode Adapter Cable extend monitoring, audio and synchronisation for multicamera productions.

The NP-SA100 rechargeable battery provides approximately 30% greater capacity than the FX3 battery, with up to approximately 170 minutes of continuous recording. Fan-assisted thermal management supports extended recording, while front and rear tally lamps provide clear recording confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the FX3 and FX5?

The FX3 is smaller, lighter and more affordable, while the newer model adds a stacked sensor, 5K Open Gate, internal X-OCN RAW, three Base ISO settings and more extensive monitoring and connectivity.

Should I choose the FX5 or FX6?

Choose the FX6 if built-in electronic variable ND and SDI connectivity are important to your workflow. The smaller alternative provides 5K Open Gate and internal X-OCN RAW, making it particularly attractive when compact rigging and greater recording flexibility take priority.

Is Open Gate useful if I deliver in 16:9?

Yes. Capturing the full 3:2 sensor area provides additional image above and below a 16:9 frame, giving you more freedom to crop, stabilise or adjust composition during editing.

Is the FX5 Netflix approved?

At present, the FX5 does not appear on Netflix’s approved camera list. The FX3 and FX6 are currently listed as approved models.

Will my existing E-mount lenses work?

Yes. Compatible E-mount lenses can be used, including Sony G and G Master models and a wide range of third-party photographic and cinema lenses.

Do I need the XLR Handle Unit to record audio?

No. The camera includes a 3.5mm microphone input, so the handle is not essential for every setup. Add the optional XLR-H2 when you need balanced XLR connections, phantom power or up to 96kHz/32-bit float recording.
