Sony ZV-1 II Vlog Camera Summary

Following the successes of the original award-winning compact all-in-one camera for content creators, comes the second-generation Sony ZV-1 II Vlog Camera. This version features a new wider ZEISS 18-50mm f/1.8-f/4 zoom lens (full-frame equivalent), along with a series of enhancements to make content creation easier, with even better results.

Sony has upgraded the compact camera with their highly effective animal Eye detection alongside human Eye AF, as well as adding a new Cinematic Vlog setting, My Image Style and Creative Looks for one-tap movie styling.

The built-in 3-capsule microphone now includes directional audio recording and you can use Product Showcase for improved focusing between the subject and objects during hands-on product reviews. The touchscreen experience has also been updated, and is now more in-keeping with smartphone operation. Sony has managed to cram all of these upgrades into their compact point-and-shoot camera, which is even a hair lighter than the original.

A host of other features are made for vloggers and multi-platform content creators, such as multi-face recognition, which automatically adjusts bokeh, zooming from the touchscreen, an easily viewable recording tally light, red recording frame and much more.

Naturally image quality is exceptional thanks to a 20.1 megapixel 1-inch sensor, which is combined with Sony’s fast BIONZ X imaging processor and a wider ZEISS Vario-Sonnar zoom lens. You can also harness Active Mode electronic image stabilisation in order to keep your footage smooth, even while walking and talking to camera.

Sony ZV-1 II Vlogging Camera in More Detail

Fit everything in the frame with a wider zoom lens

The ZV-1 II includes an ultra wide angle 18mm zoom lens, which is ideal for selfies and group shots with more background showing. The wider focal width of the ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T* 18-50mm f.1.4-4 zoom lens (full-frame equivalent) provides a versatile focal range for everything from ultra wide scenes and vlogging, to standard focal width portraits.

High-quality results

The 20 megapixel 1-inch sensor provides better performance than smartphones, with better low light performance and real bokeh qualities. When paired with the ZEISS zoom and Sony’s BIONZ X image processor you have a responsive compact camera, which produces excellent image quality.

Vlogging ready

A series of features are designed to make it easier to create compelling vlogs, such as a tally light which switches on while recording and a more user-friendly flip touchscreen. A red reducing frame also highlights when the camera is recording in selfie mode and the vari-angle LCD monitor provides accurate, smartphone-like operation.

Cinematic vlog settings

Sony has added the Cinematic vlog setting, which instantly turns all of the settings to vlog-oriented ones at the touch of a button.

Cinematic Vlog Setting presets include five looks and four moods (auto, gold, ocean and forest), which can be activated with a single tap. These automatically adjust settings such as saturation, contrast and more:

  • Cinematic
  • Clean
  • Chic
  • Fresh
  • B&W

Electronic image stabilisation

You can achieve stable, shake-free footage more easily when shooting movies with the Active Mode electronic image stabilisation feature. This helps you achieve appealing movies even while walking and talking to camera.

Enhanced intelligent 3-capsule mic

The 3-Capsule microphone in the second generation ZV-1 M2 has been upgraded with selectable directivity to record audio from the front, rear and from all directions. This is ideal when recording vlogs, interviews and groups in order to capture more professional sounding audio. A windscreen also helps to reduce unwanted noise while recording outdoors or in windy environments.

Intuitive and easy to use

The ZV-1 II is easy-to-use, with clickable control icons displayed on the screen or by using physical buttons on the rear of the camera. Sony has also updated the interface to provide a more familiar smartphone experience, with features such as swiping up from the bottom of the screen to access frequently used settings and functions. These ensure you can control the camera more easily to suit your personal workflow.

Shotmark is a great time saver, which helps you find clips you’ve recorded, even if you have lots of movies or longer scenes.

Advanced connectivity for easy sharing

It’s easy to share your content with the Sony ZV-1 II camera thanks to Bluetooth and a dedicated app, which also allows you to update firmware. The camera is also UVC/UAC streaming compatible for live streams at home or on-the-go, with all of your favourite social channels and meeting services.

Add the Sony GP-VPT2BT Shooting Grip for a professional-level remote control for your productions.

A more sustainable design

Sony is making moves towards sustainability through the use of recycled polyester in the microphone wind shield, recycled materials being used in the camera body and more environmentally friendly packaging.

Our Verdict

The second generation compact all-in-one vlogging camera from Sony is a nice evolution of the original, gaining a wider ZEISS zoom lens, which is better for vlogging, selfies, group shots and to capture more of the background. Sony has also added several upgrades, which make it easier to capture and share great content.

You can record smooth electronically stabilised 4K 30p video and high-speed 120p in Full HD for slow motion effects, with newly added style presets for various recording situations. These include Product Showcase, Bokeh Switch and Cinematic Vlog Settings, all of which contribute to higher production values and brilliant content for your audience.

The 3-capsule mic now provides selectable directional audio recording, which ensures you can capture crystal clear sound, whichever direction it’s coming from. Creative Looks have also been added alongside My Image Style, which save time when creating your own distinct video style.

Live streaming via a computer or smartphone is a piece of cake thanks to a new USB-C connection, there’s an HDMI Micro connector and the camera can be used as a webcam for meetings and presentations.

The Sony ZV-1 II is a well considered upgrade over the original, which makes it easier to capture and share great quality content with your audience.
