Product Summary

The Tamron 20-40mm F2.8 goes wider than a conventional standard zoom without losing a natural everyday view, all in a 380 g lens that measures just 88.7 mm long. The constant F2.8 aperture keeps low-light and creative options open from landscapes and travel to street, portraits and video.

Fast VXD autofocus keeps pace with moving subjects, and close focusing at 20 mm makes dramatic wide-angle detail shots possible. This zoom lens is small enough to go wherever the camera goes.

Wider Than A Standard Zoom

Starting at 20 mm gives landscapes, architecture, interiors and video a broader perspective than a typical 24 mm zoom, while 40 mm suits street scenes, food and portraits. You can move between expansive compositions and tighter framing without changing lenses. On an APS-C Nikon Z camera the equivalent range is 30-60 mm.

F2.8 From End To End

The maximum aperture holds at F2.8 across the whole range, giving control over shutter speed and depth of field as light falls. The nine-blade circular diaphragm supports smooth defocus and rounded bokeh, adding creative scope for environmental portraits and close-up details.

High Optical Performance, Less To Carry

Four LD (Low Dispersion), two GM (Glass Moulded Aspherical) and one Hybrid Aspherical element control optical aberrations while keeping the lens remarkably small for a constant-aperture full-frame zoom. At 88.7 mm long, 74.4 mm in maximum diameter and just 380 g, it brings F2.8 performance without building a large kit around it.

Fast, Quiet Focusing

Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor delivers high-speed, high-precision autofocus from close range to infinity, with smooth tracking of moving subjects. Its quiet operation suits video and situations where AF noise would distract. The zoom ring turns through just 65°, so the full range is reached with minimal hand movement.

Close Up, Still Wide

Minimum focus is 0.17 m at 20 mm (1:3.8 magnification) and 0.29 m at 40 mm (1:5.1). Shooting close at 20 mm keeps the surroundings in frame, for wide-angle close-ups with real context and depth.

Built For Hybrid Shooting

Compact dimensions, quiet focusing and an ultra-wide start make this a natural choice for handheld video and vlogging as well as stills. Tamron Lens Utility adds Focus Ring Function Setting and firmware updates, while moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating provide additional protection outdoors. An enhanced exterior surface also improves durability in regular use.
