Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens for Sony E in More Detail
Updated 2nd generation optics
The 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 (Model A063) is a fast aperture standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras and the successor to the popular 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD. Tamron focused on high resolution and impressive image quality by harnessing a redesigned optical system, while maintaining a similar compact size as its predecessor. To virtually eliminate optical aberrations LD (Low Dispersion) and GM (Glass Moulded Aspherical) lens elements have been used. The lens provides exceptionally strong optical performance, with edge-to-edge sharpness across the frame and throughout the entire zoom range. You can also achieve soft, beautiful bokeh effects that are distinctive to fast aperture lenses.
Close-up photography lens
Close focusing has also been improved with a Minimum Object Distance (MOD) of 0.18m at the wide 28mm end giving you an impressive working distance of about 4.4cm to your subject. The maximum magnification ratio is 1:2.7 getting closer to any subject while enjoying the world of wide angle macro photography. In addition at the 75mm telephoto end the MOD is 0.38m with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.1.
High-speed, high-precision AF
The AF drive system is equipped with Tamron’s VXD linear motor focus mechanism. VXD is exceptionally responsive and operates at high speed with great precision, approximately twice as fast as the 1st-generation lens. With reliable, fast focusing you are ready for those important moments. The AF drive motor is also very quiet, which is important when recording video.
Improved operation and ergonomics
The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens incorporates a new design that will become the hallmark of future Tamron lenses. Grip texture has been improved by redesigning the striped pattern on the focusing and zoom ring rubber. The lens has also been refined for smoother operation. The surface of the lens exterior is now shiny black, far glossier than previous models.
Tamron Lens Utility for lens customisation
This lens is compatible with the new Lens Utility software developed by Tamron. The Lens Utility is operated on your PC by connecting the lens via an optional Connection Cable to update firmware and customise lens features.
Tamron lens glossary for this model:

Our Verdict
With the recent releases coming from Tamron like this 2nd generation 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens you’d be right in thinking Tamron has nailed their mirrorless lens designs. Not only have they listened to customer feedback and updated the exterior of the lens, but the optical design has also been greatly improved, providing higher resolution rendering along with excellent image results throughout the range. The lens also features an updated linear focus motor for faster and quieter focusing abilities, making it ideal for capturing moving subjects and video recording.
With a standard zoom lens of this type you can shoot all sorts of subjects, which typically includes portraits, landscapes and city shots. With that in mind the lens includes a competent moisture resistant structure along with a fluorine coating to help keep the front element clear. We also note that BBAR-G2 Coating has been used to reduce flare and ghosting when shooting backlit subjects, which is ideal on this type of optic. A compact design has been maintained despite these improvements with a 67mm filter thread and relatively low 540g weight. All in this is an extremely welcome update to an already popular fast aperture lens and should be high on anyone's list of standard workhorse zoom options.
