Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 Lens for Sony E-Mount in More Detail
Fast and precise AF with improved tracking performance
The AF drive continues to employ the VXD4 linear motor focus mechanism (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), combining class-leading speed and precision, which in turn enables you to achieve fast and accurate focusing. However the calculations are reworked to enhance tracking of moving subjects, ensuring you never miss decisive scenes whether shooting still images or video.
Vibration control
The 70-180mm F2.8 G2 lens is equipped with Tamron’s VC5 mechanism. This suppresses camera shake that tends to occur when shooting at the telephoto end, during close focusing, or when shooting in low-light conditions. The image stabilisation feature helps to capture sharper results during any of these shooting scenarios.
0.3m minimum object distance
Shooting at close distances which were possible when manual focusing with the 1st-generation lens is now possible with the 70-180mm f/2.8 G2, when using autofocus. Tamron has succeeded in shortening the MOD (minimum object distance) to 0.3m at 70mm, where the working distance is just 12cm. The maximum magnification ratio is 1:2.6, expanding the possibilities for expression with just one single lens.
Tamron Lens Utility™ software compatibility
Tamron Lens Utility, which is developed in-house, lets users change lens settings, assign camera body functions and update firmware when required. Users may customise functions for various stills photography and videography styles, for a more personalised shooting experience.
Supports creators who work in the field
With a Fluorine coating on the front element, moisture resistant construction and BBAR-G27 Coating, the 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 lens is ready for all of your outdoor escapades. The fluorine coat helps reduce cleaning time with an easy-wipe, repellant surface, while Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2 coatings reduce flare and ghosting, helping to maintain contrast and image quality, when shooting in backlit environments.
Tamron’s holy trinity of lenses
Tamron has always designed unique focal width lenses, which provide a slightly different range to many conventional options. The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 Lens for Sony E is the longest in their holy trinity of lenses, all of which features a wide constant aperture.
It’s joined by the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD at the ultra wide end, and 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 Lens in the middle, providing photographers with a viable alternative to traditional fast zooms.

Our Verdict
Tamron has made significant improvements to this generation mid to telephoto zoom lens, which improves on the already immensely popular first generation model. With a bright constant aperture throughout the 70-180mm zoom range, users can achieve beautiful defocus areas in all but the very darkest environments, even while handholding.
Thanks to its compact proportions and light weight, the Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 Lens for Sony E is also the smallest and lightest lens of its kind, for full-frame (FE) Sony cameras. Due to this, creators can travel and hike to capture incredible shots, without the bulk and extra weight of comparable lenses from other brands.
Image quality has been improved too, with the G2 lens sporting a new optical design with special lens elements to render very high image quality throughout the zoom range. Image quality is supported by the addition of vibration control, which effectively minimises camera shake, even when using ultra high-resolution 61 megapixel bodies such as the Sony A7R V or the A7CR.
When coupled with the closer minimum focus distance and high-speed AF, you have an extremely versatile zoom lens, which can be trained on a wide variety of subjects, which will ensure this is an extremely popular option for Sony creators.
If you’re upgrading from the previous generation lens, or have other unwanted camera gear, why not grab a free quotation to trade-in your lens and use the money you make to offset against this G2 model.
