Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Lens for Nikon Z in More Detail
Ultimate compact telephoto zoom
Having been designed specifically for mirrorless cameras, with an F6.3 aperture at the telephoto end, the 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 is the world’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless telephoto zoom lens. It measures 150.3mm (5.9 in) long with a maximum diameter of 77mm and weighs just 580g (20.5 oz).
The zoom range makes it easy for photographers to experience compression and limited depth-of-field unique to a powerful telephoto lens. This Z mount lens is also ideal for users who want to reduce their luggage weight and hike with a lighter load on trails and nature walks.
Superior performance and portability
The 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 optical design successfully balances a compact size with high image quality. The optical construction includes 15 elements in 10 groups, with an LD (Low Dispersion) lens element to suppress axial chromatic and other aberrations which are common with telephoto zoom lenses. When zoomed in to 300mm, which is a commonly used telephoto focal length, the lens delivers excellent resolution from edge-to-edge. The results are extremely crisp and clear throughout the entire zoom range thanks to Tamron’s BBAR Coating, which is renowned for providing excellent anti-reflection qualities.
Exceptionally quiet AF technology
The AF drive incorporates a sensor that accurately detects the position of the lens while the RXD motor unit delivers optimised AF control. This delivers very fast and accurate autofocusing and allows users to maintain pin-sharp focus even with continuously moving subjects, which are common subjects for telephoto zoom lenses. Thanks to the exceedingly quiet AF, the lens can be used discreetly in concert halls and other situations that require low noise levels, as well as for video shooting.
Tamron Lens Utility software
Users can employ the dedicated TAMRON Lens Utility software that was developed in-house by for Nikon’s Z mount system. This enables you to easily update the lens to the latest firmware, without going through your camera.
Moisture resistant construction
Tamron has included seals which are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to inhibit moisture infiltration and rain from entering the lens. This provides an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors during adverse weather conditions.

Our Verdict
With numerous lenses for other camera systems receiving incredibly high praise, the arrival of the Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Lens for Nikon Z mount will be met with jubilation from Nikon mirrorless users. Tamron is renowned for providing compact and lightweight zoom options, with useful focal lengths at extremely compelling prices. This model continues this trend and claims the accolade of being the world’s smallest and lightest telephoto offering this focal length.
These attributes provide full-frame Nikon users with a brilliant option for travel, hikes and simply to keep weight down, despite the ability to capture distant telephoto subjects.
The optical design is arranged to render high resolution across the frame as required by Nikon’s exceptional sensor designs, with well-balanced, low aberration and natural results throughout. Crisp details are further enhanced by Tamron’s unique BBAR coating which does a great job in reducing reflections.
For faster moving subjects and when silent AF is required, the 70-300mm lens includes the highly proficient Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive. This has a solid reputation of delivering high performance results including when tracking subjects, for both stills and video. A moisture resistant construction tops off the list of desirable features for creators who add this lens to their collection.
