Viltrox AF 85mm f/2 EVO Lens for Sony E Mount Summary
The Viltrox AF 85mm f/2 EVO Lens for Sony E Mount is a lightweight, full-frame autofocus prime lens, which provides excellent optical performance and easy handling for portraits and everyday photography. It features a relatively bright f/2 maximum aperture for good subject separation and light gathering in low light. The 85mm focal length provides a natural working distance that suits a range of subjects, and is especially popular for portraits of people and pets, street photography, close-ups and short telephoto shots.
The optical design consists of 10 elements in 8 groups, including two extra-low dispersion (ED) and two high refractive index elements, which help to reduce chromatic aberrations and maintain contrast. An HD Nano multilayer coating improves light transmission while controlling internal reflections, and the front element features a water-resistant and anti-fouling coating for easier cleaning.
Autofocus is driven by a quiet STM stepping motor that delivers smooth and accurate performance, which is suitable for both still photography and video recording. The minimum focusing distance of approximately 0.74m allows for close framing of the subject, while manual focus is available when fine control over the focus point is needed.
The compact lens features a precision-machined aluminium alloy mount for excellent durability, and a standard 58mm filter thread allows you to attach commonplace filters and lens accessories. Thanks to USB-C connectivity firmware updates can be installed to ensure continued compatibility with Sony’s latest mirrorless models.

Optical Design and Image Quality
Viltrox has built the AF 85mm f/2 EVO with 10 elements arranged in 8 groups, using two extra-low dispersion and two high refractive index lenses to maintain detail and contrast throughout the image.
This effectively reduces chromatic aberrations and colour fringing, producing sharp results even when shooting wide open. The f/2 aperture provides smooth background separation and gentle bokeh, making it well suited to portraits, still life, and selective-focus work.
Coatings and Protection
The HD Nano multilayer coating enhances light transmission and minimises flare when shooting in bright or backlit conditions. The front element has a water-resistant and anti-fouling coating, helping to repel dust, moisture, and fingerprints.
Fast and Quiet Autofocus
An internal STM stepping motor drives autofocus quickly and quietly, which is useful for video and stills. Manual focus control is also precise, with good response for adjustment when required.
Build Quality and Handling

Our used products are subject to wear and tear in comparison to brand new products. This also applies to accessories that are supplied with the camera including batteries which may have a lower optimum performance level/life expectancy.
- Like New – The equipment is in a condition as if you have just bought it from the manufacturer. The item is still considered to be ‘Like New’ even without the original packaging and accessories. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect working order. Lenses are optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade. The product has been fully tested and is in perfect excellent order.
- Cameras – Should have no marks on the LCD screen
- Lenses – Should have no marks on the elements and optically clear. There may be light dust present that will not effect the imagery.
- Very Good – The equipment may have some slight cosmetic wear to the paintwork and cosmetic blemishes with only light signs of use and the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – The LCD screen may have small signs of wear that does not affect its display
- Lenses – The mount of the lens will start to show signs of wear
- Good – The equipment is showing more obvious signs of cosmetic wear and blemishes, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen may have scratches or wear that is starting to affect the display.
- Lenses – May have slight dust inside that does not affect images. The mount shows signs of use.
- Well Used – The equipment will show significant signs of wear. The paintwork will be coming away in large areas exposing the metal work, but the product has been fully tested and is in great working order.
- Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body.
- Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.
