Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z Summary
The Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens for Nikon Z mount is a large aperture full-frame manual focus lens. The optical design employed by Voigtlander has been optimised for Nikon Z system cameras and the powerful image sensor.
The Nokton 40mm f/1.2 lens is equipped with electronic contacts, which communicate data between the lens and the body. In addition to EXIF data and 3-axis in-body image stabilisation, the lens has three types of focusing support capabilities:
- focusing by colour changing of the focus point frame
- peaking function focusing
- focusing with the enlargement button
The lens design is comprised of eight elements arranged in six groups, two of which are double-sided aspherical lenses. Despite its compact size, the lens achieves an astonishingly large f/1.2 aperture, which is perfect for separating your subject with a razor fine shallow depth of field.
Key Lens Features
- Designed exclusively for the Nikon Z mount
- Data communication with the body through electronic contacts with EXIF information
- Rigid and durable all-metal lens barrel design

This lens is equipped with electronic contacts, but there are restrictions on the bodies that can transfer lens data. Please check the list for Body Firmware EXIF compatibility below.

Our Verdict
NOKTON is the name given to fast Voigtlander lenses with a wide F value of f/1.5 or less. The merit of fast lenses is the large bokeh which can be achieved when shooting wide open, and looks simply stunning. When combined with the natural field of view, which this 40mm lens renders and the high quality optical design that employs two double-sided aspherical lenses, you get incredibly detailed and well controlled results.
Experimenting with shallow depth of field is a joy when you can shoot wide open at f/1.2 and the lens gathers light even during particularly dark shooting situations. This allows you to capture great shots of the city, portraits, street photography and landscapes in virtually any light while handholding.
The lens is optimised for Nikon sensors and has electronic contacts which communicate with the body. This captures EXIF data, is compatible with 3-axis body stabilisation and offers three types of manual focus assist, resulting in pin sharp fine focusing. The all-metal lens barrel design is strong and durable, whilst retaining a retro feel, reminiscent of old school lenses. The Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical prime lens is a great choice for Nikon Z photographers who enjoy immersing themselves with manual focusing and playing with shallow depth of field.
